Today we’d like to introduce you to Fatima Emlemdi.
Hi Fatima, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey with the Interfaith Center began in 2016 when I joined Miami University as a faculty member and served as a co-advisor for the Muslim Student Association (MSA). At that time, we frequently used the Interfaith Center for potlucks, meetings, and community gatherings. What immediately stood out to me was how welcoming, inclusive, and inviting the Center was for people of all backgrounds.
A year later, I was invited by the previous Board Chair to join the Board of Directors. As a board member, I had the opportunity to collaborate with dedicated colleagues to develop programs that addressed a wide range of topics and engaged diverse audiences. Some of the most meaningful experiences involved helping facilitate conversations that brought together
people from different faith traditions, cultures, and life experiences to learn from one another and build understanding.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Interfaith Center adapted by moving many of its programs online. Our Zoom gatherings became a platform for connection, creating a space where people from around the world could come together, find community, and support one another during a challenging time.
I later served as Co-Chair of the Board for two years, and today I am honored to serve as Board Chair. In this role, I am guided by the wisdom, experience, and commitment of our board members. The Interfaith Center has played an important role in my own journey, and I am grateful for the opportunity to help advance its mission of fostering understanding, dialogue, and meaningful connections across differences.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Like any nonprofit organization, the Interfaith Center’s journey has not always been a smooth road. Some of our biggest challenges have come during periods of transition, particularly when searching for qualified leadership that not only has the necessary skills and experience but also shares the Center’s mission and vision. Finding a Program Director who can work
collaboratively with the board and help advance our goals has been critical to our success.
Financial sustainability has also been an ongoing challenge. As a nonprofit, we rely on the generosity of donors, grants, and community support to maintain our programs and operations. In addition, our physical location is a historic building, which is both a blessing and a responsibility. The building provides a unique and welcoming space for our community, but it also requires continuous maintenance, repairs, and upkeep that demand significant time, effort, and resources.
Despite these obstacles, we have consistently found ways to move forward. The dedication of our board members, and the outstanding leadership of our Executive Director, Geneva Blackmer, have enabled us to overcome challenges and continue serving our community. These experiences have strengthened our organization and reinforced the importance of collaboration, resilience, and a shared commitment to our mission.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My professional work centers on student success, educational access, and community building. I serve as an advisor for the Early College Academy (ECA) at Miami University, where I work closely with high school students as they navigate the transition to college. I help students develop academic plans, overcome challenges, and discover pathways to achieve their
educational and career goals. I also teach part-time at Miami University’s main campus, which allows me to stay connected to students in the classroom and better understand their experiences and needs.
What I specialize in is creating opportunities for people to thrive and feel a sense of belonging. Whether I am advising students, teaching, or serving as Chair of the Interfaith Center Board, my work is rooted in helping individuals from diverse backgrounds connect, grow, and succeed. The mission of the Early College Academy aligns closely with the mission of the Interfaith Center because both focus on empowering people, building inclusive communities, and creating spaces
where everyone feels valued and supported.
I am probably best known for bringing people together. Throughout my career, I have worked to build bridges across differences, whether through educational programs, cultural events, interfaith dialogue, or student engagement initiatives. I believe that meaningful relationships and authentic conversations have the power to transform individuals and communities.
What I am most proud of is the impact these efforts have had on students and community members. Seeing students gain confidence, earn college degrees, and pursue opportunities they once thought were out of reach is incredibly rewarding. I am also proud of helping create programs and spaces where people from different faiths, cultures, and perspectives can come
together with mutual respect and understanding.
What sets me apart is my ability to connect education, community engagement, and intercultural understanding. I approach leadership with a collaborative mindset, a commitment to inclusion, and a genuine belief in the potential of every individual. Whether I am working with students, colleagues, or community members, my goal is always the same: to help people feel seen, supported, and empowered to reach their fullest potential.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
We were given this question originally: What role has luck (good luck or bad luck) played in your life and business?
I believe luck has played a role in my journey, particularly in the opportunities I’ve been given to meet inspiring people and serve in meaningful roles. However, I have found that what often looks like luck is really the result of relationships, hard work, perseverance, and being willing to step forward when opportunities arise. Even challenges and setbacks have brought valuable
lessons and growth, ultimately helping me become a better leader and advocate for the communities I serve.
