Today we’d like to introduce you to Demayl Powell.
Demayl, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
After college, I started out in the field of social services. I really enjoyed interacting with and advocating for others. After several years of working in that area, I was laid off from my job. Being a creative, I knew whatever I did next HAD to appeal to my creative side if I was going to last in that position. I prayed and waited for God to give me instruction. I really felt a leading to begin making and selling candles. I did the research on how to make candles, and I got busy. I quickly developed a small customer base. My customers began suggesting that I try making other products they were interested in, so I did. One thing led to another. Starting out with soy candles in the late 90s, I then experimented with body wash and lotions. That went on for a few years while I worked as a temp and sold Avon. In 2009 I began experimenting with shea butter to create a hydrating non-whipped body butter. I did that, and the response was overwhelming. It provided fantastic results to those with problem skin in a short amount of time. I began offering my butters with fragrance as well. That aspect made them even more desirable. After a few months of positive feedback, I decided to call my product a “Shea BALM” because of how it offered healing and restoration to dry, troubled skin. The name of my business came about after praying and asking God for a name that He would be glorified for this amazing healing balm He gifted me to share with everyone. Sweet Smelling Savour is the name I was given to name my small business.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Along the way, it was a process that had times of frustration. It was his deepest desire for steady growth. I wanted that growth to be fast. What I soon discovered was I could only grow at the rate of my knowledge to manage the increased responsibility of a growing business. I began seeking out business classes and workshops in my city. As I learned, the business grew as I was able to properly steward what had been entrusted to me. I eventually made the business an LLC.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I make a variety of fragranced items to make yourself, your house, and your vehicle smell good. Every item offered is still made by hand in a small batch for quality and consistency. The products offered are
*Scented Shea Balms
*Massage Oils
*Soy Candles
*Room & Linen Sprays
*Air Fresheners for Vehicles & Home
I’m most proud of the fact that something that comes naturally to me is now sustaining me and known by many even beyond my city & state.
I feel like the customer service I offer, the customer service I was taught in the 80s with my first job, is what makes me stand out in today’s market. I offer a polite greeting, a listening ear, a warm smile, plenty of please and thank you’s, and a sincere appreciation for each dollar spent with my business.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
What I like best about Columbus, the city I live in, is that there is opportunity for everyone who has a business dream. There are often resources available to pursue that dream as well.
