Christie Davis

Hi Christie, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Hello, my name is Christie Davis, and I am the founder of Natural Pretty Hair, which is an all-natural, handmade hair and skin care company based in Euclid, Ohio, also known as the lakefront city. We are not your typical beauty brand. Our mission is to provide our customers with high-quality, all-natural hair and skin care products. We are dedicated to offering safe and effective solutions that enhance the natural beauty of hair and skin while also prioritizing the holistic health and well-being of our customers. Our products are meticulously crafted using organic and sustainably sourced ingredients, ensuring gentle and nourishing formulations that are free from harmful chemicals and toxins. We strive to empower individuals in their self-care routines by offering a range of products that promote healthy, radiant, and sustainable beauty practices.

Furthermore, we educate, motivate, and empower our customers by helping them dig deep down inside and love their true, authentic selves. Every human has their own unique qualities and characteristics, and we help our customers learn how to embrace their God-given natural beauty and learn how to take care of their hair and skin properly without using the harsh chemicals that are found in most beauty products that are sold in your local retail stores.

My passion for providing clean, all-natural products led me to start Natural Pretty Hair. I was tired of using harmful chemicals in my hair that made it brittle and prone to breakage. Since the age of 9, I had been getting relaxer hair straighteners, causing me to forget what my natural hair texture was like. I vividly remember the pain of getting my hair combed and the long process it took to make it look “pretty.” I recall the day my mother, out of frustration, took me to get a relaxer at a nearby beauty salon. Despite the burning sensation on my scalp, I continued to get chemical relaxers every 6 weeks until I made the decision at 22 to stop using them. By this time, I had graduated from Kent State University with my bachelor’s degree in business administration and landed my first corporate job.

My hair used to be relaxed, straight, and shoulder-length, which was considered acceptable in the workplace. However, I grew tired of the frequent relaxer treatments every 6 weeks and the discomfort of my burning scalp during the process. As a result, I decided to stop relaxing my hair, and after three months, I boldly did “the big chop” to remove all the relaxer and proudly displayed my new coily hairstyle at work. I loved my short, coily hair and initially felt confident until I faced negative comments at work. People questioned if I was having a midlife crisis or going through something which deeply hurt my feelings and shattered my confidence in wearing my natural hair. Unfortunately, this led me to revert to using relaxer hair straighteners after just four months of embracing my natural hair.

Almost three years had passed, and I still felt the desire to give up relaxers for good. I made a promise to myself to stop using relaxers as my hair was breaking off and becoming thin. I was determined to find a better way to care for my natural hair. I began researching different ingredients, watching YouTube videos, interviewing beauty professionals and chemists, and experimenting until I developed the perfect recipes for growing beautiful, healthy hair and achieving glowing skin. I started using my own products and saw a significant improvement in the health, softness, and manageability of my hair. I was amazed to see my hair growing long and strong, as it had always struggled to go beyond shoulder length without breaking. My friends and family noticed the remarkable transformation in my hair and decided to “go natural” and use my products themselves. This was the turning point when Natural Pretty Hair was born in 2018.

Natural Pretty Hair products are handmade and made from high-quality ingredients that are beneficial for the hair and skin. Our products range from natural shampoos, conditioners, hair oils, body oils, hair butters, body butters, bath and beard products.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Our journey in building an all-natural hair and skin care company has not been a completely smooth road. As with any business, we have faced our fair share of struggles and challenges. Some of the hurdles we encountered along the way included sourcing high-quality natural ingredients, establishing our brand in a competitive market, and navigating the complexities of manufacturing and distribution.

Additionally, there were difficulties in educating consumers about the benefits of all-natural products and overcoming skepticism about their efficacy. Despite the challenges, we have remained committed to our mission of providing safe and effective natural hair and skin care solutions.

Through determination, perseverance, and a passion for our products, we have been able to overcome these obstacles and establish ourselves as a trusted and reputable brand. We continue to prioritize quality, transparency, and sustainability in everything we do and are grateful for the support of our loyal customers.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My customers adore our products and have shared that they have seen a noticeable improvement in their hair and skin. Their hair is more manageable, their skin is smoother, and they have achieved a more even skin tone. Our products have also boosted their confidence in wearing their natural hair. The competitive advantage of our products is that 90% of them are multi-purpose and can be used on both hair and skin, providing cost-effective benefits for our customers. Whether they are dealing with hair loss, brittle hair, itchy scalp, dry skin, dark spots, or sensitive skin, our products can help them achieve their hair care and skin care goals. We have received positive feedback from our customers, and it brings us great joy to solve their hair and skin care problems effectively.

Our slogan is, “Be You! The natural pretty one,” emphasizing the importance of embracing your natural beauty in the face of life’s challenges. It took me a long time to feel beautiful and to accept my God-given characteristics no matter what others thought. I believe it’s crucial to promote self-love and acceptance in my business. That’s why we’ve held natural hair workshops focusing on self-love and confidence while wearing your natural hair. We also focus on the power of natural ingredients that can aid in maintaining the hair. We’ve also partnered with local homeless shelters and beauty professionals in the past to host natural hair workshops and donated products to support the women and children in need.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
As an all-natural hair and skin care company that manufactures our own products, we do not rely on luck in our business. Instead, we focus on hard work, dedication, and innovation to create top-quality, all-natural products for our customers. Our success is the result of careful research, testing, and meticulous attention to detail rather than relying on luck. However, we do acknowledge that unexpected setbacks can occur in any business, but we approach these challenges with resilience and a problem-solving mindset rather than attributing them to bad luck. Ultimately, our commitment to providing the best all-natural products and our strong work ethic are the driving forces behind our success, not luck.
