Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris Calkins.
Hi Chris, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
You know many overuse the cliche “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder”, however, in my opinion, it is much more than just beauty that meets the eye. Beauty is found in the most simplistic intricate detail of a leaf to the grandeur of majestic waterfalls. Many people overlook nature as if it were something minuet or a repertoire of everyday life. I, on the other hand, perceive nature to be much more complex and interestingly fascinating in all aspects.
For this reason, I indulge in looking at nature all around me as something that resonates deeply in my personality. I’ve always had a passion for what most people would consider normal compared to what I would consider a word of art. From a tree limb that is convoluted and twisted to the greenery draping ancient stone fountains. This is what I consider began my passion for photography and my love for nature. Yet, my journey has expanded to include cities, people, concerts, etc… all because I find fulfillment in photographing momentum occasions- as natural as they can be. Personally, I am still growing in the aspect of photography and continue to expound on my abilities to acquire even more experience in this aspect. I self-taught through many methods from just doing the normal “point and shoot” to manually setting my camera to capture images that captivate my audience and accentuate the message and field in which I am trying to convey to the target audience. This is who I am. I’m just a simple guy who loves to overindulge in capturing not just the beauty in nature, but the beauty in life overall.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Life always tends to throw hurdles at us when we least expect it. Having gone through a divorce and no home to sleeping in a car, I have experienced what many would consider being “growing pains” so to speak. This has taught me to appreciate even more so everything I do in life. Photography allows me to express my emotions, feelings, and character in the things that I capture. I find myself gravitating towards things that would seem mundane to people, yet I receive gratification in those solitude moments with nature.
It’s not easy either when mother nature tends to interfere with your plans, but I find it more of a challenge to obtain the rare side of nature that most would avoid. Not having the ability to enjoy the warmth of a home, I still go out and receive the warmth of nature. Even to this day, I will continue to go and invest my time in capturing memories.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a photographer, and I try to capture timeless special moments. I am definitely known for my nature photography, but I also love to do concert photography. Capturing all those emotional special moments so that the artists and the fans can enjoy the experience, allows me to give them a moment they will never forget. They allow me to capture all those amazing images through my perception and keen eyesight.
Besides my kids, honestly, I am most proud of the fact that despite the hard times I have had or the obstacles I was forced to overcome; I still continue to keep pushing forward and giving my all. I consider myself different from others because I try to capture the beauty in everything down to the flowers dying at the end of the season.
We love surprises, fun facts, and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
