Check Out Bria Spaulding’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bria Spaulding.

Bria Spaulding

Hi Bria, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
I started out simply doing things that I liked. I know that sounds funny, but in life sometimes you have to do the things that make you feel good, and that’s what I do. I definitely have a busy schedule, but everything I am a part of and everything that I do adds to my sanity in some way. I know in my previous interview, I spoke a lot about my trials and tribulations that I got through in order for me to get to where I am today. Although the trials and tribulations are a part of life I always attribute my success to what I have been through and where I have come from!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. Even though I am pretty successful in my eyes, the road was an is still pretty bumpy. I am so hard on myself, and I want to achieve perfection all the time that sometimes that attribute takes away from my creativity. So, one of the things I have been doing recently that has been helping my creativity as a DJ is making content and posting it on TikTok and Instagram (@DJBriTheBull). I haven’t gotten the hang of doing all of the trendy DJ videos yet, but I make content that means something to me, makes me feel good, and that challenges me. I know this may not seem like a huge struggle or roadblock for some, but all of my DJs out there know that creativity is one of the most important attributes to what we do, especially when you DJ a lot in the same places or cities. You always want your audience to hear a fresh new sound, and sometimes that comes with stepping outside of your comfort zone and digging deep to be more creative for the sake of your patrons. Another major roadblock I am facing now is just getting booked in new places. This season of my DJ life reminds me of when I first started hosting and being in the nightlife industry. I was hungry, and I did the little things in order to keep me booked and busy. It’s never a fun feeling when you feel like you can be doing more, however, it is a very humbling experience, but it is needed. Those two have been some of my most recent struggles that I know I will overcome!

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
Again, I am a DJ/Host, higher educational professional, basketball coach, and Doctoral student. One of the things that sets me apart of other people I believe is my work ethic. A lot of people may thinks event hosts come in events, grab a microphone, and just start talking. Although that may be the case for some hosts, that is not the case for me. I often spend time in my car listening to new songs, thinking of new schemes I could use to surprise and “wow” the crowd, and I will practice those until it is almost perfect. The same goes for DJ’ing. I take pride in being as versatile as possible. I may not be the best, but I definitely take the time to practice and prepare for each and every event I do, which I believe sets me apart. One of the things I am the most proud of is my story and the overall theme of perseverance.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
Aw man. This is a GREAT question! It is so many people that deserve credit for helping me get where I am today. I would go in order of how I have encountered people so; first, it would be Ralph Carter who runs Finest Ent, he was the first person to actually pay me for my hosting work! It was awesome to work with him over the years, and I definitely learned a lot from him. While working with Ralph, I met a guy by the name of Juice Finesse. Now Juice really started to show me the ropes and I learned a lot from him regarding stage presence and more creative ways to interact with the crowd. Now if we fast forward a bit during the middle of my hosting stint, I connected with Kay Capone, who was the owner of EJs Lounge, DJ Zae, and DJ AD. I had the BEST time working with these guys. While working with them, we all pushed and motivated each other like no other group I worked with before! The energy was unmatched when we worked together, and those were some of the best years of my life. We did events where 1,000 people showed up, and we did events where maybe 10 people showed up but either way, it went, I was always excited to work with my brothers! DJ Zae & DJ AD also played a big role in me becoming a DJ today. They would teach me things on our slow nights and let me open up for them for maybe 20-30 minutes, and I LOVED it. I can honestly say those two shaped how I DJ today. When I go back and listen to recordings of myself, I hear both of them, from the way I scratch to how I set up songs, even down to my song selection. I appreciate them so much. Now if you fast forward even more to where I am today, I will have to say that my brothers PlayBoiiRellooo, KB, and Ballout definitely keep me going. Rello and I met years ago, and we became very close after working together and he has played a role in my success simply because of all the work that he does. He is one of my friends that I speak to pretty often about school, work, life, and nightlife. Whenever I see him post a flyer, I just think “Dang, he has done it again!”. He definitely inspires me, but also having such a good friend in the midst of the work that we do is always a bonus. Now, KB is really one of my lifelines right now. I always know in every season of my career I am going to have someone who wants to see me do well but is also competitive and wants to do better than me; that is KB. Most people shy away from competition, but I thrive on it, so it’s helpful that we work so closely together. He also helps me a lot with song selection, and we talk often about different transition ideas and things we can do during events to keep the crowd on their toes. Working with KB has also helped me develop my role as a mentor and teacher more and more every day. Similarly to KB, Ballout has motivated me too. Ballout is still just starting out, so our story is just beginning. Y’all will have to interview me again in the next few months for more developments on that, hahahah. However, Ballout is hungry and not only want to be a great host but just a great human. He does a lot of philanthropic efforts on his own which is remarkable for someone his age. I am excited to continue to work with him and see where things go. Also, I would have to say that my mother, sister, and brother have been SUPER supportive of my during this journey. Since I started, they would come to events whether they were packed or if it was just 3 people there. A lot of people don’t have support systems like that, but I am grateful that I was blessed with the family I have.
