Hi Bolivar Lake Lodge, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Bolivar Lake Lodge is the culmination of the dreams and aspirations of four local families—three sisters, their spouses, and their parents—united by a shared vision of creating a special place where others can gather, relax, and make lasting memories. Nestled in Bolivar, Ohio, the property immediately captured our hearts, not only for its natural beauty but for the story behind it.

The previous owner, a skilled carpenter, spent many years thoughtfully building his own dream getaway. His craftsmanship and attention to detail are evident throughout the lodge, from the custom woodwork to the intentional design elements that give the space its character. We feel incredibly fortunate to carry that legacy forward.

When we took ownership, we saw an opportunity to build upon what was already there—preserving the warmth and uniqueness of the original design while adding our own vision. What began as a shared dream quickly became a hands-on journey, with each family contributing ideas, time, and energy to shape the experience we offer today.

Bolivar Lake Lodge continues to evolve as we introduce new amenities and thoughtful touches to enhance each guest’s stay. Our most recent addition is a hidden speakeasy room experience. The property also features a private 3-acre lake, hot tub, sauna, fire pit, hiking trails and a bonus cabin. Our goal has always been to create more than just a place to stay—it’s a place to truly relax, recharge and reconnect.

Today, it’s incredibly rewarding to see guests enjoy the space in their own way, whether they’re seeking adventure, relaxation, or simply time together.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Like most worthwhile ventures, it hasn’t been a completely smooth road—but that’s been part of what’s made the journey so meaningful. Transforming a unique property into a successful short-term rental takes time, patience, and a willingness to learn along the way.

One of the biggest challenges has been balancing the vision we had for the space with the realities of renovating, maintaining, and managing a property of this scale. With multiple families involved, coordination and decision-making required strong communication and a shared commitment to the end goal.

We’ve also had to navigate the learning curve of the short-term rental industry—everything from pricing strategies and marketing to understanding guest expectations and managing operations behind the scenes. Like any business, there were moments of trial and error, but each challenge helped us refine our approach.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
There’s often advice against going into business with family, but for us, it’s been one of the most rewarding parts of the journey. It requires strong communication, trust, and a shared vision—and we’ve been fortunate to navigate that together.

As a family of professionals in healthcare, education, transportation, and business, we’ve combined our strengths to build something meaningful and lasting. Bolivar Lake Lodge reflects that vision, blending thoughtful design, hospitality, and creativity into a space that feels both elevated and personal.

More than an investment, it’s something we’ve built with intention. What we’re most proud of is that it has become a destination where guests often return to gather, reconnect, and create lasting memories.

One of our greatest strengths has been the ability to tap into the many talents within our extended family—including our children and grandchildren. From hands-on help with renovations and hard labor to artistic touches throughout the property, as well as support with social media and creative ideas, each person has contributed in a meaningful way.
