Today we’d like to introduce you to Blake Derr.
Hi Blake, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
When I was a little kid, my parents saw pretty quickly that I was musically inclined. By the age of 13 I was taking music classes at my school and doing private lessons up until I graduated from high school. During that time period it was decided that I would go to Ohio State University to become a doctor in music educated. But all of that changed when I was 15. One of my friends had a dad who owned a massive recording studio and gifted me a copy of my first Digital Audio Workspace, where I would begin to compose all sorts of instrumentals and record my school friends for fun. This is when I came to realize what I really wanted to do for a career which is being an Audio Engineer. in 2015 I went to school at RECW formally known as Recording Work Shop. It changed my life. After I graduated I tried getting internships from recording studios around Columbus. I had some here and there but after a while I just started doing my own thing. I bought a bunch of recording equipment and around 2020 is when I started Audio Engineering professionally and working with record labels, selling lot of music and recording some very talented artists. As of today I own Studio6 Audio and I have a home studio that some artists prefer. I also have an office in downtown Columbus that I rent. Now I do this full-time and strive to give artists the highest quality music they could ever expect from a real industry grade studio.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has never been a smooth road for me. First I had to get the equipment to be able to do this professionally and then I had to build up my name. Get a client list. Reach out to record labels. Most importantly I had to work really hard to out shine my local competitors and show the music industry that if you record with me and have me engineer your music, you certainly will not be disappointed.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I use a wide range of microphones to record artists with. I also compose instrumentals for artists. Pop, Rock, Hip Hop, Electronic music, I’ve done it all. I specialize in vocal record and that’s what I’m most known for. The thing I’m most proud of is how far I’ve came as an Audio Engineer and business owner. People believed in me, but I never thought that I would get to the level that I’m at today. What sets me apart from other isn’t just the quality of the work that I do and the sound, but how I genuinely care about the artists I work with and making their music into a pure masterpiece.
What are your plans for the future?
My plan for the future is to grow my company and branch out into other cities. I’m planning on being very successful in the future and really financially prospering from my recording business.
