Check Out Bethany Zepp’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bethany Zepp.

Hi Bethany, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started my tailoring business, Bethany Tailoring, after spending years sewing and working with clothing from a young age. Designing, altering, and understanding garment construction came very naturally to me early on, and it quickly became more than just a hobby. Over time, I developed those skills into professional tailoring work, starting with smaller alteration projects that steadily grew through referrals, repeat clients, and consistent work.
As my business developed, I focused on creating a streamlined experience for clients. I operate through a home studio in Westerville and offer flexible fitting, drop-off and pick-up options, which works well for busy clients. My work is centered around alterations and tailoring with an emphasis on quality, attention to detail, and making sure clients feel comfortable and confident in what they’re wearing.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a completely smooth road. Like a lot of service-based businesses, one of the biggest challenges was building a client base and reputation from the ground up. Tailoring is very skill-based and trust-based, so in the beginning a lot of it came down to proving the quality of my work, building relationships, and getting referrals through consistent results.

Another challenge has been balancing growth while keeping the business personal and detail-oriented. Since tailoring is such hands-on work, there’s a limit to how much you can scale without sacrificing quality or client experience. I’ve had to learn how to manage scheduling, workflow, and client expectations while still maintaining a high standard for the work itself.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My work focuses on tailoring, alterations, and custom sewing with an emphasis on women’s formal wear. I work with a range of garments. Wedding gowns, bridesmaids, Mother of the Bride/Groom, prom, pageant, cocktail and more. I try to make the process feel approachable and convenient. A lot of my business is built around personalized service, flexible scheduling, and creating a comfortable experience for clients.

I’d say I specialize in understanding how clothing should fit the individual person, not just the garment itself. Because I started sewing at a young age, garment construction and fit have always come very naturally to me, and that helps me approach alterations with both a technical and creative perspective.

I think what sets me apart is the combination of technical skill, creativity, and the client experience. I’ve worked to create a business that feels more personal and flexible than a traditional alteration shop while still maintaining a high standard of work. My background in fashion also gives me a different perspective on fit, styling, and presentation, which influences the way I approach tailoring.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
What I like most about Columbus is how much it has grown while still feeling accessible and community-oriented. There’s a strong mix of creativity and practicality here—whether it’s small businesses, fashion, local events, or the arts scene, it feels like there’s space to build something from the ground up. It’s also a very supportive city for entrepreneurs, especially in creative and service-based industries.
