Today we’d like to introduce you to Beth Metcalf.
Hi Beth, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I graduated from Wright State University in 2020 during the Covid lockdown with a bachelor’s degree in accounting. It was a huge shock to the system to just leave college like that after such a great 4 years. I was very lost after graduation and very unhappy just working 9-5, although I was very grateful for the job. I decided to audition for Heyman Talent in Cincinnati, who ended up becoming my very first agent. I had been acting all my life but wanted so badly to transition to film. So, I got an amazing acting coach (Christine Brunner of Limelight Studios), and she helped me to get my start in the industry.
Since then, I have done over 20 different indie films/short films and have even worked on film such as White Noise (uncredited). I have traveled to places like LA, Chicago, Pennsylvania, Indianna, Atlanta, GA, and more during my journey in film.
My biggest film to date is an indie Sci-Fi B movie called It Came From Somewhere (can be found on Tubi and soon Apple TV), where I play an alien named Quasar. I will make an appearance in the upcoming Indie Horror: Crackoon, which has gone viral on TikTok (and I did my own stunts in that).
I have done a lot of my own stunts, and I am a special effects makeup artist. Kings Island got me my start with stiltwalking where I performed in Grand Carnivale 2021 (and I will be back in the same role in 2023 starting July 23). Since then, I have just accepted a position with the Cincinnati Circus, where I will be stiltwalking and learning all kinds of cool things. I do special effects makeup for films as well, where I got my start as a curious 12-year-old watching scary makeup tutorials.
Since Heyman Talent, I have additionally signed with Talent Fusion (Indiannapolis) and Talent Group (Cleveland). You might have seen me in the recent Ohio Lottery commercial regarding a Luke Combs sweepstakes!
Another thing I should mention is my 9-5 job. I am a program manager civilian worker for the Air Force and loving every minute of it! That job provides me with the stability I need to be able to do what I love.
One of my favorite things currently is my band, Session 5. One day I was mindlessly scrolling Facebook, and I came across a sponsored ad for the band. The lead singer was singing and dancing on the bar, and I just knew I had to be a part of it. I gained some courage and sent them a message asking if they needed any female vocalists.
They said yes, and before I knew it, I was auditioning with them in Columbus. They hired me on as a backup singer, but then the lead and I ended up becoming co-leads and splitting the setlist on who takes lead when. We have performed all over Columbus together since 2021 (the band started in 2020), and we even played the Pre-Party at Buckeye Country Superfest. The lead singer (Sherron Stevens) moved away in the end of 2022, and I have been the lead singer ever since. Now I perform with Steven Fu (keys), Jordan Lombardo (guitar), Tanner Marshall (drums), and a few other incredible people, such as John Harmony (keys) and Jason Hogue (bass).
I am an incredibly lucky gal to get to do so much of what I love with so many amazing people. It has only been about 3 years, but I am so happy with where I am and the legacy I am building. I intend to keep working as hard as possible to make things work and to soar in the entertainment industry.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Believe it or not, I definitely had haters. Growing into the person you are meant to be definitely comes with challenges. There have definitely been some people in my life who don’t understand. Unfortunately, I had to ultimately end up separating ties with them in order to pursue my own happiness and to keep that fire lit under me. I will say, though, people who tell you that you can’t do something will only get your fire burning brighter. Also, the industry can be tough: for every one “yes” there are about ten “no’s”. You just have to keep pushing and believing in yourself. It’s easy to feel down about it every now and then, but you have to remember the end goal and that nobody can get you there except yourself. I try to surround myself with people who love and believe in me.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am known for a lot of indie films; specifically, It Came From Somewhere (Tubi, Apple TV), Trepidity (Amazon), Dreadwood Sins (Amazon), and upcoming films such as Crackoon and Attack of the Corn Zombies. I did work on White Noise but went uncredited.
I was also in the April 2023 Ohio Lottery Commercial regarding the Luke Combs Sweepstakes.
I can be found performing at Kings Island as the Ice Princess, on stilts in parades, and at the Haunt event. This year 2023, is my 9th season, and Kings Island will always be home sweet home for me. Truly the best job ever!
My band, Session 5, can be found playing almost every weekend in Columbus, OH. We just got merchandise which we will be selling online and at live shows. I am the lead singer, and I absolutely love performing with the guys. It’s the best musical outlet I could ever ask for. We are working on a couple songs and planning to release them this year. Specifically, a song called “Mixed Signals.” Aiming for an August/September release! Be on the lookout!
How do you define success?
There is no specific universal benchmark for success, but I do believe we achieve success when we are happy with what we are doing. Success is getting out of bed every morning and putting your best foot forward. Success is also found in the failures and the lessons we learn along the way. We succeed when we accomplish a difficult goal or task or when we finally reach a benchmark we’ve set for ourselves. We also succeed when we inspire others.
