Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Winter Cabilovski.
Hi Amy, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I opened my home decor shop in Uptown Westerville in July 2012. In the beginning, I focused on a large part of the business being found vintage and antique goods and furniture with a bit of new decor mixed into the shop. After I discovered Chalk Paint® by Annie Sloan soon after opening (and after using the decorative paint), I decided I wanted to become a Stockist and retail the paint in my home decor shop. I moved into a much larger space on State Street in Uptown Westerville in Summer of 2013 and become a Stockist of Chalk Paint® as well as offering custom paint services and workshops. With the expanded space, we started to carry more new home decor and accessories for our clientele. In the late summer of 2016, we expanded and opened our second location in Downtown Delaware. We also incorporated a clothing boutique, Stone & Sparrow Apparel inside of Edwin Loy Home Delaware – offering apparel, accessories, and leather goods for women and men. We decided to bring our Stone & Sparrow Apparel boutique concept into our space in our Westerville location in early 2018. We then expanded in September 2019 in our Westerville locations by expanding Edwin Loy Home into its’ own space across the street from Stone & Sparrow Apparel. In March 2022, we chose to close our Delaware location, so Amy could focus on her passion of custom-painted furniture.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Yes and no. Having never owned my own business and no formal business background, it has been a bit of a learning process over the past 10 years. I had experience working alongside my aunt and uncle at their small business in Delaware during my senior year of college and for 3 years after I graduated. I learned the process of ordering inventory, attending markets, setting shop displays, tracking inventory, and much more. When I decided to open my own business in 2012, I used my past experience at my aunt and uncle’s small business to help navigate the challenges of owning my own business. I learned in the beginning what parts of the business to pass onto other professionals to help myself focus and grow my business.
A big struggle for me has been balance. It is hard to balance work and personal time/life. I think many small business owners would agree.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Art with concentrations in photography and drawing and an Art History Minor. I also have an Associate’s Degree in Graphic Design. I love to be creative and paint, and I have applied it in my shop by using and selling Chalk Paint® by Annie Sloan.
Chalk Paint® is a decorative paint that is used to repurpose furniture, cabinets floors, and much more. I purchase vintage and/or antique furniture that I then paint in Chalk Paint® by Annie Sloan. We also offer custom paint services – where we take customers’ furniture and paint it for them. In addition, we also offer workshops where customers can attend a class and learn how to use Chalk Paint® at home!
I am proud of being a small woman-owned business that is able to apply and use her creativity and passion for art. I believe my hard work, attention to detail, and my painted furniture set me apart from others.
What are your plans for the future?
My plans for the future do not include any big changes. I am focusing on working on a work/life balance as well as my creative side. One of the biggest reasons we chose to close our Delaware location was so I could get back into painting more furniture and growing that side of the business.
