Meet Tabetha Frazier of Pataskala

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tabetha Frazier.

Hi Tabetha, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Absolutely! My journey started with a discontinued wax melt.

I’ve always loved having a cozy, good-smelling home—especially with a busy household of five kids, two cats, a dog, seven chickens, and two rabbits! When a large company discontinued my favorite scent, I was determined to recreate it on my own—but better. I wanted something that smelled amazing but was also clean, safe, and made with quality ingredients. What began as a personal challenge quickly turned into a full-blown passion project.

In 2017, I started pouring wax melts in small batches from my kitchen, using clean ingredients sourced in the USA. Friends and family started asking for their own, and soon I had a little following. That following kept growing, and in 2023, I took a big leap and opened a storefront off Main Street in downtown Pataskala. My goal was to help breathe life into our small town and create a space that felt warm, welcoming, and full of heart.

Now, Common Scents Wax Co. offers not just wax melts, but candles, room sprays, reed diffusers, car fresheners, and more. Everything is still made in small batches with a lot of care, right here in our shop.

I’m passionate about supporting local businesses and giving back to the community. I serve on the board of the Pataskala Chamber of Commerce and proudly support local sports teams and events like First Responders Night at Watkins Memorial.

This journey has been about more than just scent, it’s about creating connection, comfort, and a sense of home. And I’m so thankful for the people who’ve supported that vision along the way.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but it’s been full of purpose and passion.

When I first started Common Scents Wax Co., I was just a mom trying to recreate a discontinued wax melt scent I loved. I had no formal business background, so I had to teach myself everything—from sourcing clean ingredients to branding, packaging, and figuring out how to actually run a business. It was exciting, but overwhelming.

Balancing business ownership with being a wife and mom to five kids has been one of the biggest challenges. There’s no perfect schedule—just a lot of late nights, early mornings, and making the most of every free moment. It can be exhausting, but it’s also incredibly rewarding.

Opening the storefront in 2023 was a dream come true, but it came with a whole new set of challenges, especially trying to grow a customer base and increase foot traffic in a small-town setting. I’ve had to be creative and resourceful, building connections through community events and collaborations with other local businesses.

One of the things that’s really helped us thrive (and brought me a lot of joy) is offering candle-making parties in the shop. It’s become such a fun way to connect with the community. Whether it’s a girls’ night out, birthday celebration, or just a creative afternoon, these events allow people to slow down, make memories, and walk away with something they created themselves. It’s been one of the most fulfilling parts of what I do.

There have definitely been bumps along the way, supply delays, trial-and-error batches, and moments of burnout—but each challenge has shaped me and strengthened the heart behind Common Scents: creating clean, beautiful products that bring people together and make them feel at home.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
At Common Scents Wax Co., I create clean, small-batch home fragrance products that help people turn their homes into comforting, peaceful spaces. I specialize in wax melts, candles, room and linen sprays, car fresheners, and reed diffusers, all hand-poured in our shop off Main Street in Pataskala, Ohio.

What sets my work apart is the intentionality behind every detail. I’m passionate about using clean, high-quality ingredients sourced in the USA, and I pour each batch myself to ensure consistency and care. I also design each scent with a story or feeling in mind, whether it’s a cozy night in, a fresh start to the day, or a nostalgic reminder of home.

I think people connect with the heart behind the brand. I’m not a big factory or a faceless company, I’m a mom, a neighbor, and a small-town shop owner who genuinely cares about the products I make and the people I serve. That authenticity resonates with my customers.

One of the things I’m most proud of is the sense of community we’ve built. I love hosting candle-making parties in the shop, it’s become such a fun and meaningful way for people to come together, create, and make memories. Watching someone light a candle they made themselves and beam with pride, it never gets old.

In a world that moves fast, I want to create something that invites people to slow down, take a deep breath, and feel at home. That’s the heart of my work, and it’s what drives me every day.

How do you think about luck?
I think luck has played a role—but maybe not in the way people usually think of it.

There have been moments of good timing that I consider lucky, like stumbling across the perfect storefront space in downtown Pataskala just when I was ready to take that next step. Or meeting the right people in the community who were willing to support and collaborate with a small, growing business. I’m incredibly grateful for those moments, because they helped open doors I might not have found on my own.

But more often, I’ve found that what looks like luck is really preparation meeting opportunity. I’ve put in a lot of hours behind the scenes, testing products, building relationships, learning as I go, so when a “lucky break” came along, I was ready to take it. That mindset has helped me stay grounded, especially during the tougher seasons.

And yes, there’s been bad luck too, supply delays, unexpected expenses, and things that were simply out of my control. But even those moments have helped shape my resilience and creativity. They’ve taught me to pivot, to ask for help when I need it, and to keep showing up even when things feel uncertain.

At the end of the day, I believe in making your own luck by doing the work, staying true to your values, and being open to whatever opportunities come your way.
