Story & Lesson Highlights with Mazen Hasan of Cleveland

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Mazen Hasan. Check out our conversation below.

Mazen, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: Are you walking a path—or wandering?
I like to say “strategically stumbling.” I always have a plan/strategy in everything I do, but at the end of the day, life is going to tear apart that initial plan and then it’s about how you navigate through it, that’s when it really starts. Nothing great ever has an easy path.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Mazen Hasan, owner of Cleveland’s Cool Clothing. We sell all sorts of Cleveland apparel that speak to the people of the great city of Cleveland. Our goal is to bring awareness to our city in all sorts of fun & creative ways. Our designs put a smile on people’s faces in a way that differentiates us from others. It’s the cleverness and genuine feel of our designs that separates us.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
I had a few knee surgeries in high school and it taught me at an early age that nothing in life is guaranteed. To cherish every moment because you never know when something may change or get taken away from you. I’ll also say it taught me a lot about how much hard work and persistence can do for someone’s life. Having to recover from those injuries helped me build my work ethic and I feel that it’s been an advantage I have in everything I do in life.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
It taught me how to become better and evolve. We don’t grow in comfort, we grow in chaos. The times I didn’t want to do something but did it anyways knowing my future self would be happy I did or the times I failed and it bothered me so much that it made me work even harder. Those are the times in my life that I have grown the most.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What’s a belief you used to hold tightly but now think was naive or wrong?
That success is a one size fits all/only has one look or one definition. I now believe that success is to each their own. It’s what drives someone and makes them happy to achieve it. It doesn’t matter how others view your success as long as you achieve the goals you set out to achieve and prioritize what matters most to you.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What do you understand deeply that most people don’t?
That you are remembered more for how you make people feel vs what you accomplish in life.
