Story & Lesson Highlights with Allyson Fronk of Columbus

We recently had the chance to connect with Allyson Fronk and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Allyson, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
I can get really wrapped up when I am drawing on my iPad. If I have a great idea for a design or illustration, I can get sucked into the point of totally losing track of time – what seems like only a few minutes can be an hour or more. Over the last year, I have been trying out new styles of illustration on my iPad including textured illustrations with lots of layers and digital watercolors. I have so many ideas bouncing around in my head of illustrations I want to create, that I make time to draw whenever I can.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi, my name is Allyson Fronk and I am a calligrapher, illustrator, and hand lettering artist based in Columbus, Ohio. I specialize in day-of wedding calligraphy and hand letter items such as welcome signs, seating charts, and place cards. I take pride in creating wedding signs that are beautiful, functional, and truly unique and for each couple that I work with. In a world quickly becoming overrun by AI art, my hand-lettered work reflects my level of training, skill, and attention to detail. My work is a great fit for couples looking for bespoke pieces that will add character to their special day and are not just a product.

In addition to wedding calligraphy, I love supporting local businesses and organizations to create murals and custom signage that serves their unique needs. I also using my drawing skills to create illustrations and designs for stickers and stationery products that I list in my Etsy shops.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who taught you the most about work?
I’ve learned so much about hard work from my dad. Even though he doesn’t work in the creative sector like me, he has taught me so much about what it means to work hard to provide for your family. He has given his best every day in his 35-year career to better his workplace and care for his employees. He taught me a lot about what it means to be a professional and the importance of networking to further your career, which is something I often struggle with as an introvert.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I would definitely encourage my younger self to continue trying all things creative. As a child, I spent a lot of time doodling in a sketch book as I watched tv on the couch. I never really showed those drawings to anyone, but the time I put into experimenting with drawing has really helped establish the artistic skills I now use every day.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My faith and my family are the most important things in my life, and I think my closest friends would agree with that! I strive to put God first in my life each and everyday, and to share my faith with my three sons as well. My husband is my best friend and a great partner and supporter of both my business and life in general.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I honestly think that a part of me was born to create, and my business is definitely an amazing outlet for my creativity. Having a creative business was not ever something I envisioned for myself as a career when I was younger, but in this season of life, it’s something I’m really passionate about. My business provides me with the flexibility to care for my family first and also to share what I create on a regular basis.
