Today we’d like to introduce you to Tina Marie.
Hi Tina, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My story began in Cleveland when I was in high school, I began working in the local malls doing beauty services specializing in eyebrow threading, makeup, and eyelashes. After graduating high school, I went to the University of Akron for a couple years for music, then I moved back home to enroll into beauty school in North Olmsted to become an Esthetician, as I realized one of my callings in life were to be in the beauty industry professionally. Eventually, I relocated to Florida, in which I completed skincare school and became a Licensed Esthetician. I juggled between doing my own mobile beauty services along with working in local franchise salons. After I had my children, I realized I wanted to pursue another journey, which was making handmade products for your skin.
The back story to the birth of my business, Tanoa Essentials, was a result from my son having eczema at mere 2 months old. We were prescribed steroid cream, after steroid cream. The problem was, these creams had a negative side effect after using them for a while, which made me research on natural alternative ingredients that I could use to soothe and heal his skin, without the harsh chemicals.
In a nutshell, I fell in love with the process of making moisturizers and soaps for the body. I wanted others to experience a natural solution to their everyday skin issues such as eczema, psoriasis, dry or sensitive skin. I also create products for those without sensitive skin, who simply like to smell good with a purpose, in which I use quality premium oils that’ll leave your skin feeling smooth, confident, and smelling yummy for hours.
As of today, I have been in business for almost two years, and I am excited to continue to grow and expand to the fullest capacity. My business is mostly online, however, my end goal is to have my own shop someday. I also participate in local pop-up events from time to time. Besides running my business full time, being a mom and wife, I was going to school full time for the past 3 years and I recently became a Registered Nurse. One of my dreams is to merge my business, esthetician, and medical background, and have my own Medical Spa, in which I can bring all worlds together collectively.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
My business journey has equally had its fair share of ups and downs. There are times where things have been really great, and other times where orders were sparse. My family has supported me a lot throughout this journey, and for that, I’m thankful because a lot of my sales, in the beginning, were from loved ones. Word of mouth and testimony is everything, and can really get your name out there. I would say staying relevant on social media is something that I struggle with from time to time. It can be overwhelming with the amount of time spent creating, editing, and posting content. Sometimes you put a lot of effort and love into a project, only to see little to no reward, and it can be a bit discouraging. I consider myself an ambivert, and I feel like I haven’t conquered social media as I’d like to as far-seeing active engagement and organic growth. Considering my business is mostly online, I would say marketing myself on online platforms/social media, and having repeat customers has recently been a struggle.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Besides running my business full time, I am married with two children. Professionally, I work at a hospital as a Registered Nurse.
What makes you happy?
Living and experiencing life with the ones I love most makes me the utmost happy. I am a wanderlust at heart, and I have a bucket list of exciting things I want to do regarding exploring the world with my family and loved ones. Doesn’t take much to make me happy, it’s the little things for me. Other things that make me happy include interesting knowledge, food from different cultures all over the world, deep belly laughs, being healthy, and making sure my family is comfortably taken care of.
