Today we’d like to introduce you to Shawn Ziegler.
Hi Shawn, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’ve never taken the traditional path, and I think that’s what has shaped me the most. I started my career in the mechanical piping and construction industry, where I worked my way up through the trades by showing up every day, learning from experienced craftsmen, and taking pride in doing quality work. Over the years, I advanced into leadership roles, eventually overseeing large commercial mechanical projects and managing teams of pipefitters.
Along the way, I realized I wanted to become more than just a skilled tradesman—I wanted to become a better leader and business professional. That’s what led me back to college to pursue a degree in Business Administration while continuing to work. Balancing work, school, and family hasn’t always been easy, but it’s been incredibly rewarding.
Today, I’m focused on continuing to grow both personally and professionally. My long-term goal is to use my experience in the field along with my business education to help improve the mechanical construction industry, whether that’s leading operations for a great company or eventually building one of my own. At the end of the day, I believe success comes from hard work, continuous learning, and treating people with respect
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I think everyone faces challenges, and my path has been no exception. Building a career in the skilled trades meant long hours, physically demanding work, and learning through experience. As I moved into leadership roles, I had to shift from simply being good at the trade to learning how to manage people, solve problems, and make difficult decisions. That transition taught me that technical skills alone aren’t enough—you also have to develop communication, patience, and accountability.
On the personal side, balancing a full-time career, raising a family, and returning to college has been one of my biggest challenges. There were plenty of late nights, early mornings, and moments where it would have been easier to put my goals on hold. But I’ve always believed that growth comes from pushing through discomfort.
Those experiences have made me more resilient and have reinforced the importance of lifelong learning. Every obstacle has taught me something valuable, and I believe those lessons have made me a better leader, husband, father, and professional today.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’ve built my career in the mechanical construction industry, working my way up from the tools into leadership positions through hard work, continuous learning, and a commitment to doing things the right way. I’ve had the opportunity to lead commercial mechanical piping projects, mentor apprentices and journeymen, and help develop teams that take pride in delivering quality craftsmanship.
What I enjoy most about my profession is that no two days are the same. Every project presents new challenges, and I enjoy finding practical solutions while helping people grow in their careers. I believe the best leaders never stop learning, which is one of the reasons I returned to college to pursue a degree in Business Administration. My goal is to combine my field experience with business knowledge to become a more effective leader and help improve the way mechanical construction companies operate.
I’m proud to represent the skilled trades and hope to encourage others to see them as a rewarding career path. Skilled trades are built on integrity, teamwork, and craftsmanship, and I believe those values are just as important today as they’ve ever been.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
If I had to choose one quality that has contributed most to my success, it would be perseverance. I’ve never believed in taking shortcuts or giving up when things get difficult. Whether it’s learning a new skill, leading a team through a challenging project, going back to college while working full-time, or setting personal goals, I’ve always believed that consistent effort eventually produces results.
I also believe success is built on integrity. People remember whether you keep your word, treat others with respect, and do the right thing even when no one is watching. Skills can be taught, but character is something you build every day. Those values have guided my career and continue to shape the kind of leader, coworker, and person I strive to be.
