Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Geers
Hi Sarah, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Back in 2012 when I graduated with a journalism degree but was lost and didn’t have a clear path forward, I decided to run my own blog, and my dad bought me a Canon Rebel T2i. My blogging ambitions lasted about six months before I committed to graduate school to become a high school English teacher, so the camera was shoved to the back of the closet for about a decade as I pursued my teaching career.
In October of 2021, my dad suddenly passed away, and I entered a period of grief that was so overwhelming at times, I didn’t know how to express it. I looked back at photos of me and him from my wedding, where we were hugging and crying, and felt so much love from those photos that I decided to get the camera out of the closet again and start shooting. My grief needed a creative outlet.
I started with family sessions, did some headshots, shot a wedding or two, and almost four years later, I’ve found my niche as a senior portrait photographer!
This whole experience has shown me that it’s okay to put things on pause—to come back to them later when the time is right. Now I’m a veteran high school English teacher and a business owner; it has been a wild ride! (And don’t worry, I’ve upgraded my camera equipment:-))
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Finding clients and marketing can feel like a hamster wheel you just want to get off of at times. Like many creatives, I go through highs and lows, experiencing self-doubt and feeling like what I do isn’t enough. There are so many talented artists and photographers in my area, so avoiding the comparison game can be difficult. I try to remember during those moments that I need to be kind to myself, because in truth, I’ve made a lot of clients happy the past four years and it’s something to be proud of!
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a senior portrait photographer helping graduating seniors capture a milestone moment that brings them and their families a sense of pride. I have something unique to offer because I teach high school and am around that demographic every day. I find it easy to relate to my client, make them feel comfortable during sessions, and create an environment that’s fun! I like to say that I help seniors be their authentic selves in their portraits.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up, I was always very sensitive to the feelings of others. A true romantic dreamer, I read a lot of books and created imaginary worlds in my head. Music was always on in my household, and my dad would play his guitar every single night. I took dance and singing lessons, did plays and musicals, and performed in my high school show choir. I’ve always surrounded myself with stories and lyrics that help explain the human experience. I’ve found a lot of comfort in that.
