Rising Stars: Meet Phil Kline of Cleveland

Today we’d like to introduce you to Phil Kline.

Phil Kline

Hi Phil, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I am currently a sports photographer. Before sports, I was, and always will be, a street photographer. In college, I wasn’t somewhere downtown taking images on only three consecutive days. I would edit endlessly in class, but I definitely should’ve listened to more. My work eventually propelled me to a scholarship. My life revolves around photography and only a little more. I have always tried to have a camera in my hands; most family VHS tapes have moments of me begging my dad for the camera. Outside school, you would find me working at the local camera shop; you still will. I am becoming knowledgeable after the years. I’m a guy trying to take photos however I can.

It wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been relatively smooth so far?
It hasn’t necessarily been the smoothest of roads, but I’m happy to be as far along as I am. My support system has always been excellent. One of the most extended challenges, imposter syndrome, is big for me. It wasn’t three or 3 years ago that I started calling myself a photographer, but I started about 7 years ago.

Thanks for sharing that. Can you tell us more about your work next?
I am an architectural street and sports photographer. I try my best to organize the world in a manner I enjoy. I found solace in street photography as I walked through the streets of Cleveland, jamming along to the music. I try my best to let that peace shine through my work. Finding the mundane rather interesting, whether it was how the light was falling, if the angle of the building was just right, or if I ‘timed’ the plane just right. Being how I see the world invites others to join, even for a small moment.

What do you think about happiness?
As generic as it sounds, my family makes me happy; my wife, Peyton, and I have made quite the little family with our 2 cats and 2 dogs. Mac, Monet, Myles, and Millie. We just moved into our first home and are doing small projects around it. We’ve been watching a lot of reality TV and playing games. I’ve been playing a lot of Pokemon outside of that. Photography itself makes me happy. It gives me the creative outlet to express myself in many ways.
