Today we’d like to introduce you to Patty Flauto
Hi Patty, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’m currently an abstract painter and arts educator. Both my undergraduate and graduate studies were in fine art. It’s amazing and wonderful that my entire career has allowed me to use color and design. Starting as a textile designer for home furnishings fabrics-this laid the groundwork for years of product development work. Forecasting color and design trends as well as selecting color and design directions for many consumer products companies such as American Greetings, Rubbermaid, Corning to name a few. This kept me busy, but I still managed to have a residential interior design business as well. I am now a full time artist and my days are spent making and teaching.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The only minor struggle throughout was balancing the desire to make art with need to make a living. I wouldn’t trade all of the experiences that I had while working for amazing companies, clients and students.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I enjoy getting lost!
I always hope that both the viewer and the artist look to find a way though my paintings, but after a time, the beauty of abstraction is not to find your way, but instead to find the joy of getting lost.
Much of my abstract painting is based on the perceptual landscape, transcribing both the organic and the geometric as found in nature. Using my own filters of memory, sensory experiences and artistic interpretation, I build layer after layer until compositions collide and hang in a delicate balance dangling and hinting at unexpected outcomes. Dissonance is intentional and is explored through infinite variations.
Teaching color and abstract principles is so rewarding. A community of creatives share their work and ideas so freely during our sessions. I’m convinced that I learn more from the students that they learn from me!
What does success mean to you?
A personal satisfaction that measures up to what you want for yourself. I have learned that this measure can and should morph along the way and be appreciated at every point in time even if it doesn’t feel like “success” in the moment.
