Rising Stars: Meet Naeemah Purcell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Naeemah Purcell.

Hi Naeemah, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born in Washington, DC and briefly lived in King George, Virginia. I was born Muslim. I come from a family of entertainers, authors, and creatives. I always loved to entertain and would come up with my own shows at home. I was taught singing and piano by Mrs. Bernice Hammond at the Northeast Academy of Dance.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It has not always been a smooth road. I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis at 14 years old and Endometriosis at 26. I was bullied in my school years. I also dealt with depression, PTSD, and anxiety which made it hard for me to perform. I’m a domestic violence and rape survivor and I speak out about these topics a lot.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a blogger, author, and influencer. I am also the creator and owner of the podcast Not Your Normal Discussion. I’m the most proud of my podcast because we are giving the millennials’ take on what’s happening in our world and our communities. We are very opinionated and unfiltered. What sets us apart from other podcasts is the fact that we are a group of young black millennials that have different views on so many topics. We are super unfiltered and have no issue rubbing people the wrong way if needed. We bump heads at times, but at the end of the day, we love each other like family. We are a mixture of parents, fur parents, single, in a relationship, married, and divorcées.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
What makes me happy is seeing the world be united on the right issues. When I see that, it makes me see that this world isn’t just chaos and craziness. Music and animals also make me happy. Music has always been deeply ingrained in me from my youth. Animals have always been my passion, and I have studied to be a veterinary assistant.
