Rising Stars: Meet Michelle Brunner

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Brunner.

Hi Michelle, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
I have loved art for as long as I can remember. I graduated with a degree in art education and have been teaching high school art for almost 20 years. In 2017 I started painting in my sketchbook every day. I painted mostly landscape scenes from my summers on the Lake Erie Islands. I started posting my paintings on Instagram and began to sell them online and through galleries. I love painting mostly coastal paintings that include sailboats, hydrangeas, and island views.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have been some obstacles. Mostly finding time to create art has been a struggle since I teach full-time and am a wife and mom. Finding the balance is never easy. Selling online is fun but can be a struggle when things are constantly changing and I am trying to always find new ways to market my art.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am an acrylic painter who specializes in coastal landscapes. I am known for my blue and white paintings of hydrangeas and sailboats. I am most proud of painting on large canvases recently. I started just painting in my small sketchbook and have gradually gotten to painting on 30 x 40 canvases. I am hoping to work on even larger ones in the future! What sets me apart from others is that I live on an island in the middle of Lake Erie for most of the summer. My experiences there have inspired me and are shown throughout my artwork.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Most people might not know that I live part-time on an island in Ohio. A lot of people do not think of Ohio as being “coastal.” Ohio has amazing coastal scenery along Lake Erie and inspires most of my work.
