Rising Stars: Meet Megan Hurley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Hurley.

Megan Hurley

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My name is Megan, and I’ve been a makeup artist and fashion stylist since I was 10 years old. (haha) Truly, my admiration and practice of styling of beauty and fashion began very young. Fashion magazines and MTV’s House of Style helped me understand that style if not just outward-facing. Beneath it all lies a story, motivation, and self-expression. I was in love. Fast forward a couple of decades, I’ve received a fashion merchandising degree, worked for interior designers, sold advertising for a magazine, and moved to Philadelphia spending 5 years in commercial real estate. What a mix! It wasn’t until I got really serious about pursuing my talents that I began Style Counsel and my immersion in my local beauty and fashion communities.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth road. Not at all. And quite frankly, it still isn’t smooth. As a business owner in a creative field, you have to be very self-motivated to not only do the work but to build your community and network! I am also continuing personal education so I stay engaged with new trends and the direction style! This may sound easy and “fun,” but I assure you it takes a lot of time, strategizing, and effort! Some months are robust with style projects, and some months are crickets. It takes a lot of heart to push through those times; with all that said I can’t imagine doing anything else. The work I’m able to do is so rewarding and pings my talents completely. I’m very grateful for this time in my life.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Me and my business partner, Leah, style a wardrobe for talent appearing in commercial photo and film shoots. We also provide hair and makeup services, too! We love working with production crews in planning the style direction for the projects! I think the project the company is most proud of is a commercial we just shot for a vehicle brand called Rivian. We can’t wait to see it in their marketing – it’s pretty cool!

What sets us apart is the pre-planning work we do for a project. We show up prepared, professional, well-dressed, and on time! We make ourselves available as much as possible, and we communicate very thoroughly. Collaboration is very important to us, so relationships are very valuable to the company, we treat our clients and projects with care.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
Luck is a funny thing. You think of it in the moment when something of value comes along, yet it’s so easily forgotten because you’re searching for the next thing. We have a saying at Style Counsel: Luck happens when preparation meets opportunity. I truly believe that. If I stay aligned with my goals and follow through, luck comes through the door. The predecessor to luck is diligence.
