Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary Ann Sedivy.
Hi Mary, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My lifelong interest in art started when I was in grade school and developing further in High School and College. While in college a strong love for painting was cultivated. During a career as a high school art teacher, I taught about many forms of art-making, and found I too learned as I taught! This was a plus for the development of my personal creative processes. Maintaining a studio space has been relevant to my creativity and I’ve always had a space somewhere in the house for my art. My current studio is an outbuilding which we built 5 years ago on our property. There’s plenty of room to paint, display paintings and make a lot of beautiful messes!
I paint primarily in acrylic with a focus on landscape, nature, and abstracts. Sometimes I layer collage media into the paintings for added texture and interest. My pieces are bright, colorful, and expressive. Color is truly an underpinning of my paintings; I find it joyful to work with color while it brings joy to many.
Painting is irresistible to me, there’s always a new subject to explore, a new color combination, a new composition. Totally good fun that will never get old!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been a smooth road! If there were any struggles, it was in trying to find the time to create during the years when raising our children and working full time.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?

I would say I’m known for my use of color, it’s uninhibited, bold, and bright.
I’m proud of my creative output, work ethic, curiosity, and willingness to play and explore.
My paintings are bold, with strong and confident brushwork, along with the fearless use of color–these set me apart–or at least with a grouping of other painters who work that way.
I’ve been told that my paintings bring people joy, comfort, happiness, and peace.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Take workshops, and learn from others. Be curious, and ask questions. Maintain a sketchbook/or painting sketchbook.
Maintain an art practice in some way, somehow–whether it’s drawing in a sketchbook when you can to whatever you can fit in your life.
Go to museums, galleries, and art exhibits.
Enter art shows and attend the openings, it’s a great way to meet other artists.
About art shows–have a thick skin, we win some, we lose some.
Take walks! Observe. Walks are good for stimulating creativity. Especially good when an idea is stuck.
