Today we’d like to introduce you to Mark Hall.
Hi Mark, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Back in early 2019, I had been looking for a creative outlet. I had previous experience with simple point-and-shoot cameras and I always loved the idea of photography. After doing extensive research on different camera bodies, I took the plunge and purchased my Nikon with a kit lens. Walking around taking pictures of nature, people, and scenery and hearing the mechanical shutter snaps had me hooked immediately. I knew I wanted to keep exploring this thread and see how far I could take it. During one late night a few weeks later, I had the idea to buy a website to showcase my work and I came up with the name of “We Capture Light”. As a business school graduate, I had a mind to earn money back on my large investment of my camera platform and endeavored to create an LLC. Although the LLC didn’t last, I knew that growing and fostering my photography business was going to be the passion project I always wanted and needed – opting for a simpler Sole Proprietorship. The pandemic certainly hindered some business growth but it allowed me to hone and focus my skills. Today I am happily profiting off my business and enjoy working with my clients to satisfy their requirements.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth road – which I am grateful for. Most of my biggest learning challenges allowed me to humble myself and dig into those frustrations and come out ahead. In my early inexperienced days, I dropped the ball and left some clients unhappy initially. After reflecting on their feedback, I made corrections and worked with them to make sure they felt they had their needs met. These growing pains are painful for a reason, and it trained me to take feedback in stride and to push myself to be better and to always come prepared.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I pride myself on my unique approach to my photograph edits. I see life vividly and I like to bring that vision to my work. My images are contrasted, detailed, and almost pop out with colors and depth. I see a lot of industry trends with a desaturated, brown, and soft look, but I tend to go for larger-than-life photos. My goal is to make the viewer feel the scene and picture themselves right there in the scene.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
If you’ve never had a photoshoot, I highly recommend it! They are fun and reward you with more than just a great album of memories. There doesn’t need to be a special occasion: just get some of your favorite clothes, go find a fun activity, and make the most out of it!
