Today we’d like to introduce you to Marie Negrón.
Hi Marie, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born and raised in PR and at the age of 21 I moved to Kansas with my husband and my 4-year-old son because my husband joined the Army, we lived there for 4 years. It was very difficult for me because I didn’t speak English at that time and I had to learn by just watching tv or listening to others around me. I worked in a chocolate factory and that also helped me to keep learning the language. While I was still living in Kansas, I had my daughter and when she was about 9 months we moved to Cleveland Ohio where my husband family was living and I started working in different jobs to help with the household expenses, then I found a factory job (Norman Noble inc.) I worked there for almost 10 years. My sister-in-law worked there as well and after so many years doing the same job we were tired and one day she suggested to go to beauty school and so we did. We started going to school part-time while we kept our full-time job. I finish school after 2 years and it was very challenging keeping a full-time job from 4:30 am until 3 pm (we used to work 10ths shift) to then run to the house cook dinner for the family and then go to school from 5:30 pm until 9 pm. But I’m May of 2011 I finally received my cosmetology license and I’ve been working really hard ever since to be a great stylist and to have a very happy clientele. I worked in a salon for a year which gave me some experience in the industry. After 2 years of having my license and with the help and support of my husband I opened my first salon and after a year we have yo look for a bigger location because we were growing fast and after a year, we moved to the Fairview Park area where are currently located.
I’m currently a brand ambassador for 2 amazing companies like Trionics hair care and Olaplex. In 2018 I was name top 100 stylist by Modern Salon magazine. I won Colorist of the year in 2018 with The industry award show and again in 2019, I won the Colorist of the year and Salon team of the year. Also, in 2019 I won the best curly color with Licensed To Create awards by Cosmoprof. My work has also been nominated by behind the chair one shot awards. In November of 2021, I had the opportunity to work with Odell Beckham and get his color ready for the super bowl.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I had many challenges along the way. But one of the. Offset one has been to keep a salon team. At one point I had a salon team of 7 stylist. after returning from being closed for 7 weeks due to COVID I received the news that 6 of the 7 stylist were leaving at the same time to open their own privets studios.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
All I can say about my job is that I’m in love with it. I don’t see myself doing anything else. I love the creative freedom, the beautiful connections I make with clients and colleagues. I enjoy making my clients feel beautiful and confident.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Without risks, there’s no growth. I’m always doubting myself and constantly questioning my next move but even if I’m scared, I don’t let fear stop me. Opening my salon was very scary to me but I did it. I recently started offering classes to other stylist and it terrifies me but I’m still going to do it. I believe that if only one person can benefit for what I can offer it definitely worth it.
