Rising Stars: Meet Mari Da Goat

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mari Da Goat.

Hi Mari, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I had spent most of my adolescence listening to rap music but in 2016 it became a huge part of my life due to the XXL Cypher that year. Even then I never knew I’d become a rap artist. Throughout my early teenage years, I was aiming to play basketball in college so I was focused on being a student-athlete. I would spend everyday hooping with my boys, most notably Rayvon Griffith, but we all listened to rap as the cultures intertwined gradually. I didn’t get my start at a lunch table or a slow come up freestyling on the block like most rappers from Cincy got their start.

It started with me making memes about me being a SoundCloud rapper in a group chat with my friends. Then my friends would jokingly hype me up to freestyle in the Xbox parties to rap and I’ll say a bar or two then keep making jokes. I really became Mari Da Goat just goofing around. I had decided to surprise my friends with a low quality song I made at a studio but we all realized I had a gift for rapping.

My growth as an artist was rapid and you can hear the evolution of my sound throughout every song. From rapping on loud South Florida trap drums to anime samples, I made a small but global fanbase due to my versatility. I do like to have fun with my music but that doesn’t mean I don’t take it seriously. Recently one of my inspirations as a rapper, Lil Boom, co-signed my most popular song and I know that’s just beginning. I’ve only been making music for about a year and I’ve come a long way but I still have a long way to go.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I have had great struggles managing myself as an artist. I was practically on my own at a young age and started rapping while still being in school and working to help the fam out. I was still playing basketball and preparing for college but I had issues figuring out what I should put my time into. I also struggled with my image because I just have a big personality and I like to make different music so I wouldn’t be able to go in one direction as Mari Da Goat. These turned into strengths because of how I mentally toughed through these problems.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a rapper/songwriter, Known for my various EPs I dropped this year. I stand out from others because I’m the only rapper at this level of prowess to rap about what I rap about. Most rappers who are into anime are placed in a creative box but I broke out of that “box” by being versatile and delivering songs that cross sub genres. I also made a listener base by being myself, unlike many other artists.

What matters most to you? Why?
My fans mean the most to me, I wouldn’t have gotten this far without their support and engagement. Each and every one of my listeners, whether they just listen to “Otaku Flow” or “degenerate overlord” are like a 2nd family to me.
