Rising Stars: Meet Marcus Waine of Canton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marcus Waine.

Marcus Waine

Hi Marcus, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
So I started making music and releasing it around 2019 via SoundCloud/Spotify, but my background started in vocal jazz/choir in middle school and high school. I started actually taking piano and production classes around the 5th grade and started studying guitar around the 8th grade. After high school, I went to college at Kent State and then continued at Berklee College of Music for music production. Since 2019 I’ve released 3 studio albums, and multiple ep’s and singles under the label .SINGLETON, which also doubles as my brand as well! Currently I’m working on a new album/character called .WINSTON. Since late 2024/early 2025, I’ve released 3 singles from the album which are quickly gaining traction on the independent scene since the start of this rollout. The album is also set for release later this year with the date still TBA, but we’re shooting for the summer.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has mostly been a smooth road, sometimes production can be tricky since things can change all the time, but mostly smooth sailing.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
So about late 2021/early 2022 I started a brand and production company called .SINGLETON. I was mainly inspired by Frank Ocean’s “Boys Don’t Cry” and Blonde. I wanted to create this space in which my ideas can bloom, but the listener can immerse themselves within the artwork and feel a part of themselves throughout the process.

I believe I do a decent job of making my music palatable for everyone, while also keeping this simple by not doing too music outside of myself.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love that my city is very tight knit and supportive of the growing arts community, I do however wish that there were more opportunities for minorities and people of color to showcase their art. Sometimes it can feel like a “it’s all in who you know” environment. I believe my city does well in supporting the arts in different ways, but I would love to see more diversity within that.
