Today we’d like to introduce you to Lou Rivera.
Hi Lou, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Skully Media was created by two videographers who specialized in Wedding Videography. Skully was always a what if, then the pandemic hit and really forced us to blossom. With having backgrounds in Marketing, Advertising, and Public Relations, we put our heads together to serve the community in a compelling way. We believe if someone is passionate enough to own a business, they must have a story. Business owners are the building blocks in our community. We are their storytellers. We take the background we have in Wedding Videographer and pull heartstrings and draw emotion when creating videos. We take our background in business and know where to put them for people to see, hear and feel their story.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road was bumpy in the beginning (like any new business). We tried the social media management, building graphics, etc. We really had to listen to our hearts and uncovering what we love and do best… which is creating content and providing value to our fellow business owners.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We are two dudes with a camera who uses video to tell a businesses story. We’re known for emotional, heart-grabbing, fun, and cool videos. Some might know us as the guys who do Random Object videos on TikTok and Instagram Reels. What sets us apart from the others is that we take the laid-back approach. We’re human. We aren’t a big firm who has a big team. What sets us apart is we don’t consider our “clients” clients; we consider the our friends. Because we know the rewards and the hardships a business owner goes through because…hey! We are too! We take the time to listen and learn everything we can about the business before even thinking about putting a price in front of them. We uncover their needs and goals and find out where the video will live. This is so important because we want it to perform. OR they’ll post it, get 50 views and never call us back. We’re a high-end Video Production company without the big scary cameras. BUT compare our work to those who are, and we compete. We understand Youngstown Businesses don’t want to spend tens and thousands of dollars on a huge production for a Commercial, Social Media Video, etc. But we care enough to give them the quality their story deserves.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
My only advice to those starting out is DO NOT BE AFRAID TO PUT YOURSELF OUT THERE. If you want to be a creator of any kind, create what brings you joy. Your work is an expression of you, and that resonates. I see so many talented people who hide behind the curtains because they are scared what others think. On social media especially. Post that song you’re scared to post because it isn’t “perfect.” Make an Etsy account for your art. Film travel vlogs. Become a photographer. It’s more important than any amount of money.
