Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayla Printup
Hi Kayla, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My journey in the beauty industry began in 2013, practicing makeup and brows in my bedroom as a teenager. While attending Ohio University, I discovered my passion for beauty, creating makeup tutorials on YouTube and becoming known as the campus makeup artist. I worked with students and organizations, building my skills and reputation.
After graduating in 2017, I moved back to Columbus, balancing a corporate career and bridal makeup on weekends. In 2018, I earned my Masters of Business Administration from Franklin University, and focused on my role as an Account Manager in healthcare IT. However, in late 2019, a layoff forced me to reevaluate my future.
In early 2020, I secured a new role as a Project Manager for a construction company, but I still felt unfulfilled. When the pandemic hit, I started exploring ways to take control of my career. I trained in permanent makeup with a local artist in May of 2020 and fell in love with the craft. By June, I secured a studio, launched Siren Beauty Bar, and began promoting myself on social media. In July, I took the leap, quitting my corporate job to pursue my dream full-time.
Nearly five years later, I’m proud to run a thriving permanent makeup business, combining artistry and entrepreneurship in a career I truly love!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Starting a business and transitioning from a stable corporate career was both exciting and overwhelming. One of my biggest challenges was navigating the uncertainty that came with leaving the security of a 9-to-5 job. I had to trust myself and my vision, even when things felt unpredictable.
Another major struggle was building my business during the pandemic. There were constant fears about whether I could make this work financially, especially since I had just invested in training and securing a studio. Marketing myself as a new permanent makeup artist in a competitive field was also challenging, but I leaned into social media and word-of-mouth referrals to get my name out there.
On top of that, balancing my personal life, financial pressures, and learning how to be an entrepreneur required me to step outside my comfort zone. I made mistakes, but every challenge taught me resilience and resourcefulness, which helped shape the business I have today.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m the owner of Siren Beauty Bar, specializing in permanent makeup, particularly brows and lips. As a licensed esthetician, I also offer body waxing and natural brow services, including brow waxing, tinting, and lamination. I’m best known for my brow artistry, focusing on enhancing natural beauty through precision and customization. Additionally, I’m an instructor, training aspiring artists in permanent makeup to help them launch successful careers in the industry.
I’m most proud of the trust my clients place in me—helping someone feel confident and beautiful is incredibly rewarding. I also take pride in mentoring students who have gone on to build thriving businesses of their own.
What sets me apart is my holistic approach to beauty. I don’t just perform services; I create experiences. My background in artistry and business allows me to blend creativity with professionalism, client care, and education. I’m committed to staying ahead of industry trends while prioritizing safety, quality, and personalized care. Whether it’s a client’s first appointment or a student’s first training, my goal is always to leave a lasting positive impact.
What are your plans for the future?
I’m excited about the future of Siren Beauty Bar and the opportunities to expand my brand. One of my biggest goals in 20205 is to launch and grow my online training programs for permanent makeup. I want to create a comprehensive platform that empowers aspiring artists to learn and thrive in this industry, no matter where they’re located.
I’m also exploring ways to generate passive income through a variety of digital products. Currently, I co-own The Collective 614, which is a salon suite business located in Gahanna, Ohio. However, I plan to create my own brand of salon suites in partnership with my mom. With my beauty and business experience and her experience as a realtor, our goal is to build a supportive community for beauty professionals and eventually franchise the concept to help others succeed.
On a personal level, I’m focused on building financial freedom and stability, which will allow me to invest more into my business and community. I’m looking forward to continuing to innovate, mentor, and make a meaningful impact in the beauty industry while living out my passion.
