Rising Stars: Meet Karim Jackson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Karim Jackson.

Karim Jackson

Hi Karim, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
After earning my Business Management degree from Wilberforce University, I embarked on a journey that saw me exploring the corporate realm with stints at a financial services company and a major retail distributor. Realizing my true passion play elsewhere, I pursued a master’s degree in Higher Education at Wright State University.

My professional trajectory led me to The Ohio State University, where I worked in Graduate Studies, followed by a fulfilling role in community engagement at the City of Columbus. There, I established and led the My Brother’s Keeper Initiative (MBK Village).

Currently, I serve as the Assistant Director of Development at I Know I Can, a premier college and career access program in Columbus that is nationally recognized for its success. Simultaneously, I take pride in managing my family’s non-profit, Jackson Sports & Leadership Academy, which is undergoing an exciting rebranding initiative in early 2024.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
While my journey has been rewarding, it hasn’t been without its challenges. Navigating the transition from the corporate world to the realm of higher education presented its complexities, requiring adaptability and a commitment to pursuing my true passions. Additionally, establishing and leading the My Brother’s Keeper Initiative in the City of Columbus came with its set of challenges, demanding perseverance and strategic thinking to overcome obstacles.

Each step in my career path, from The Ohio State University to my current role at I Know I Can, has brought valuable lessons and experiences. Managing my family’s non-profit, Jackson Sports & Leadership Academy, has also posed its share of hurdles, but the journey has been marked by growth and resilience. Overall, these challenges have been instrumental in shaping my professional and personal development.

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
As the Assistant Director of Development at I Know I Can, I specialize in cultivating meaningful relationships with donors and stakeholders to support our mission of expanding college and career access for central Ohio students. I am known for my dedication to creating impactful partnerships and my commitment to fostering a culture of philanthropy.

One of my proudest achievements is contributing to the success of the organization’s fundraising efforts, ensuring that more students have the opportunity to pursue higher education. My ability to connect with individuals and organizations, coupled with my strategic approach to development, sets me apart in the field. I take pride in being a catalyst for positive change and playing a pivotal role in empowering the youth of Columbus.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up as the second youngest among three boys and four girls, I had a laid-back personality and got along well with everyone. I’ve always possessed a generous personality, aligning with the meaning of my name, Karim. In my formative years, I engaged in various youth development and cultural exposure activities, alongside participating in sports from an early age. Playing three sports in high school and eventually focusing on basketball in college shaped my interests and instilled a passion for both teamwork and individual growth.
