Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Langdon.
Hi Jason, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
When I was growing up I had a passion for art. When it came time to choose a field of study for college, I chose graphic design. It seemed like an art-adjacent field where I could make a good living. In addition to a solid understanding of color, form and composition, my design courses taught me to think strategically and holistically when approaching a problem. As a result, I was perfectly set up to enter the design and advertising workforce just as the Internet was exploding.
Over the past two and a half decades, I have worked at design studios, advertising agencies and as a freelance creative director. In addition to design, I also write and craft strategy. I have been freelancing since 2020 and in that time I have started to once again create personal art. My wife is also an artist, and recently we have been working on creating an artists’ space with studios, galleries and classrooms.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
As a freelancer it can be difficult to guarantee work keeps coming through the door, without getting overwhelmed with too much work. There have been days where things all but dried up and we had to cut back on expenses until the work picked up again. There have been other days where I have to work late or over the weekend to make up for the slower times.
That said, agency life is also not without its own struggles. Full-time positions can be very volatile, and as a result I have been laid off several times. At least as a freelancer I feel a little more in control of my own destiny.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I have worked in virtually all forms of advertising, including television, outdoor, in-store, digital and social. I excel at coming up with big creative ideas and crafting large holistic campaigns with many different consumer touch points. My ability to think outside the box combined with my robust knowledge of advertising have made me uniquely qualified to help large brands execute successful campaigns, while taking smaller brands to the next level.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
All of my mentor and mentee relationships have been through work in the form of direct reports. It can be difficult to find a mentor outside of work because, by definition, a good mentor is probably also going to be very busy. The key for the mentee in that scenario is to bring something of value to the relationship, whether its a skill, a shared hobby, or even just really good conversation.
