Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Egner.
Hi Emily, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was born and raised in Cincinnati, but always knew I wanted to move to New York and pursue a career in entertainment. I took the leap after I graduated from the School for Creative and Performing Arts, and wound-up attending college in the big apple.
I was having the time of my life – learning, growing, finding myself, and pursuing the things I love. Flash forward to junior year and there’s a global pandemic. My school went online and I was suddenly back in Cincinnati in a matter of days. Funny thing is, I haven’t left since I’ve returned home back in March 2020.
I’ve reconnected with so many incredible friends and mentors, and have found a new love for teaching. I work 3 different jobs and couldn’t be happier. I am a dance educator and fitness instructor and have been introduced to many theatrical opportunities that I never thought would be available to me. I am incredibly grateful that this pandemic brought me back to my true passions. Life always works out in ways you don’t expect.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
The most formative years are never a smooth road by any means. Throw in a pandemic on top of that and it makes for a bumpy ride. I struggled for so long trying to figure out exactly what I wanted to do with my life. I always had a broad idea, but couldn’t make it specific enough to follow one singular path.
So, I didn’t.
I came back to Cincinnati confused and unsure of the future. I kept an open mind and an open heart and invited any new opportunities that presented themselves.
I finished my degree in Film and Communications from my childhood bedroom. I am now am a teacher trying to inspire the community on a daily basis. I am working on a new project that is set to tour nationally within the next year.
I’ve learned to embrace the unexpected.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I work at 3 different studios around Cincinnati all specializing in different things. I’m a busy lady.
I’m a certified Pilates and Barre instructor and teach about 7 classes a week at Body Alive. Come visit me at both the Oakley and Kenwood locations!
I recently joined the faculty at Cincinnati Ballet. I’ve been teaching Jazz, Musical Theater, and Contemporary over the last year.
Lastly, I spend most of my time at Lachey Arts, a nonprofit theater organization that trains the next generation of artists. You can catch me either teaching a Tap class or assisting Lea Lachey on one of her many projects around town. I owe so much of my knowledge and experience to Lea and am so excited to see where our future opportunities take us.
Specifically, over the past year, I am most proud of the woman I’ve become and the work I’ve done. I used to think that I had to put myself in a box and focus all my energy into one thing, but our minds and abilities are limitless. We are so much more capable than we think. I never want to stop learning and exploring.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I’m not sure I believe in luck as much as I believe in right timing and putting in the work.
