Today we’d like to introduce you to Dustin Weatherby
Hi Dustin, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I have been a sculptor for over 25 years with thousands of creations and hundreds of live art performances from many different mediums. I tell people that I can make anything out of anything. Art has always been a big part of my life and my mother has always encouraged me on that. My focus on being a sculptor didn’t happen until college. I just went to Eastern Michigan University to wrestle, but that is where I found my path in art.
My work has been featured on several television shows, commercials, public installations, and large events including: Disney’s Foodtastic, Surviving History on the History Channel, Extreme Makover Home Edition, Food Network, Kuhl Clothing, and designing/building haunted houses for Universal Studios and Playboy’s annual Halloween Party. My biggest project to date is our Unique Art Lodge in the Hocking Hills of Ohio. It is a short term vacation rental, at Raven’s Retreat Hocking Hills, that is like staying in a sculpture museum on a 58-acre nature preserve.
I can work with almost any material but I mostly use wood and metal. For my Live Art Performances, I typically do Wood carvings, Ice carvings, and Pumpkin carvings for events. I have been building animatronics for haunted housed and theme parks for over 15 years as well. Creating sculptural experiences that viewers can interact with is my passion because it takes them beyond just spectating.
I have always loved creating things that awe and inspire the viewer.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road. Trying to make a career out of art creation is like a niche within a niche. The hardest part is convincing clients that they need your work until you are famous, haha, but if there is anything combat sports has taught me is that you have to keep driving and believe in yourself
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I create sculptures out of almost any material, although I usually work in steel or wood I also specialize in making creations out of fiberglass, plastics, ice, mortars, and silicone just to name a few. Building animatronics for different attractions is one of my favorite things to do. I am known for creating original art pieces, meaning, almost every time I produce a sculpture it is the first time I have made it. That keeps me sharp.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I have spent most of my life in Columbus, Ohio, but I’ve lived down here in the Hocking Hills for the last five years. I like both the city life and rural living. City life is convenient and rural life is quiet.
