Today we’d like to introduce you to Diana Galay
Hi Diana, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Every year I asked for the lavender backdrop, but in our home photos were considered a luxury. Which meant no matter how much I asked for color, I was given gray.
In the 5th grade, my persistence paid off. I remember how I felt in this moment. So free. So me. It wasn’t until high school that I had the chance to create that moment for someone else.
My older sister never got senior photos taken and I wanted her to have that experience. So I borrowed my friend’s fancy camera that I had no idea how to use and snapped a few photos.
They were cheesy and blurry, but they were her. Comfortable, playful and free.
The joy I felt watching my sister see herself is what made me buy my first camera. It’s the reason why I do what I do.
My first camera as a kid was a kodak disposable. Glued to my hip, everywhere I went, so did it. Even as my equipment has changed, I still photograph with the same spirit of nostalgia and attention to the instant.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The most challenging aspect has been reminding myself to remain authentic, even when my path looks different from others. Discovering my identity through photography has been a long and transformative journey. I firmly believe in the saying, “It’s the journey, not the destination,” which has guided me to exactly where I need to be. I no longer view those moments as obstacles or struggles but as valuable lessons and reminders.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I look for the light, the easy, the organic. The movement between moments, where the joy and color are found. Using both digital and analog (film) formats, I aim to capture the creative essence through my lens. Rather than directing or posing couples into something artificial, I encourage them to embrace their authentic connection, allowing for imagery that genuinely reflects who they are. I take pride in delivering wedding galleries that feel like curated art collections, presenting images in diverse formats and styles, ensuring each one stands uniquely apart from the next.
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
Slowing down and resting is more important than hustling and chasing the american dream. Learning to trust myself and that the universe has my back has taught me to surrender and let go of control which aids better imagery in the long run
