Rising Stars: Meet Devon Wenger of Lakewood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Devon Wenger.

Hi Devon, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I used to be a rapper back in the day. I never took it as serious as i could have, but i think it was for good reason. As i was transitioning out of rapping, i was going to school for Recording Arts, but without much of a direction besides that- that was until i took Intro To MIDI 101. It was in this class that i really realized that my true calling was producing (and later engineering), not rapping. It almost immidietly felt right in a way that rapping never really did.

MIDI is an acronym in the music industry that most who make music will recognize -Musical Instrument Digital Interface. Well, i created another one that helps to describe, what i believe, are the 4 core elements that are most important for a creative – Meditation, Introspection, Dedication, and Intellect.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
like all artists, i feel emotions very deeply. there are times why doing what i lovw doesnt feel easy. but thats what seperates a true artist with pssion from someone who makes art as a hobby. learning to proceed even when i feel that theres no reason to continue to try has been the hardest yet most rewarding lesson that i have learned from my carreer as a producer becuase it is something that can be taken and used outside of the music industry to help me to be more resilient in other aspects of my life.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My beats tend to be faster paced, with either a trap element to them or a chopped sample/ boom bap feel, depending on the mood and artist. But im a creative mind, so i tend to change sounds when i think things are sounding stale. but producing a beat is only maybe a 10th of what i actually do. in fact, my job only just begins once ive made the beat.

Having said that, what i like to craft when im working with an artist is hard to describe in words. i tend to create a vibe more so than just make a beat. we sit down, hang out and have conversations, just get to know each other. play some music. find some inspiration. i like to be aprt of the process as much as possible, so i prefer to work with an artist on a full project. weither its a 3 song EP or a 13 song LP, i try and make sure i can be apart of the process as much as i can; from helping to make artwork, to filming music videos, or even just connecting the artists with the right people for the job, i try to make the artists ideas come to life with as little effort on their part as possible.the goal is to get the art out of their head and into our ears, with as little trasnaltion error as possibe.

you may be able to find someone with more technical talent then me, but i guarentee that if we work together, i’ll be able to craft a vibe with you that wont be able to be replicated in any studio or with an engineer.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
the tools you have are much less importaant than the mind and crativity behind those tools.
OVO 40 made the mix for the album Thank Me Later by Drake, as well as multiple beats on that album, all in the most basic version of protools at the time, a crappy mike, and a macbook in hotel rooms while travelling on tour. he didnt have a mixing board worth more than most family homes ,or every plugin under the sun, or a microphone that people are scared to sneeze in the same room as. that album sold 1.8 million copies. never underestimate what you can accomplish with what you have. sometimes the upgrade or shiny new toy is worth it, but it wont make the producer.
