Today we’d like to introduce you to Desirée Hargrave.
Hi Desirée, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My passion for both performance and education began at a very early age. My parents often share stories of me teaching my younger siblings to read and write when I was just four years old. Growing up in a family of musicians—each of whom sang and played several instruments—made music an integral part of my life. As the oldest of four, household jam sessions were a regular occurrence, sparking my love for both collaboration and creativity.
Throughout my intermediate and high school years, I was deeply involved in both the Arts and sports, playing volleyball and basketball while also participating in musicals and plays. I chose to attend Malone University in 2014, pursuing a degree in Music. While attending Malone, I lived on campus and was very active within their musical ensembles. I studied voice, conducting, and piano. I served as the Student Conductor for the Malone University Chorale and Chamber Choir from 2016-2018 and was a member of the Malone Opera Theatre under the direction of Dr. Cynthia Wohlschlager. I have debuted original operatic works such as “Beneath Suspicion” by Dr. Jesse Ayers.
I became very involved in the Canton community and performed at the Players Guild for several years as well as other notable venues in the area. I graduated from Malone University in 2018 with a degree in Vocal Performance, and continued to perform across Northeast Ohio for several years after. I was also recognized as Rookie Teacher of the Year by Canton City Schools in 2022, as well as recognized in 2023 by WYKC Studios in partnership with Dunkin’ Donuts to recognize “outstanding teachers” in NE Ohio. https://www.wkyc.com/article/news/education/education-station/canton-music-teacher-desiree-hargrave-youtz-intermediate-school/95-d7400ea5-28c1-4fcc-b91d-800858aa2c87
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I would say that it has been a smooth road! Being a teacher is not for the faint of heart – but I wouldn’t want to do anything else!
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I have been teaching Elementary General Music and Choir in Canton, Ohio for almost four years. In addition to my work in the public school system, I also offer private lessons at the Akron Music Institute (owned by Alexandre Marr) and perform as a character actor with Castle on a Cloud Entertainment. While I enjoy teaching a variety of musical styles, my true passion lies in musical theatre!
Some of my favorite performance opportunities include playing Sarah Brown Eyes in Ragtime the Musical in Concert with the Canton Symphony Orchestra and Canton Players Guild (2024), Esmeralda in The Hunchback of Notre Dame (2018 and 2022), and Mary Magdalene in Jesus Christ Superstar (2019), as well as performing in the popular cabaret series The Broadway Princess Party alongside Benjamin Rauhala, Laura Osnes, Courtney Reed, and Susan Egan (2018).
What sets me apart is my attention to detail and deep commitment to my craft. For me, teaching goes beyond voice instruction—I aim to help students explore their vocal journey as a path to self-discovery. By integrating my understanding of mental health and vocal technique, I guide students toward building a strong, authentic connection with both their voice and themselves.
Any big plans?
I don’t have any big changes coming up – I guess we will see what the future holds for me!
