Today we’d like to introduce you to Cecil Holston Ii
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started off my journey as a licensed mental health therapist working with the re-entering population and their families. I was new to the field of social work and was about 6 months removed from my undergraduate degree in Social Work. I continued to work in the field for about 7 years before working my first therapist job. I began working with children and adolescents in a school-based setting. I was able to help them identify their voices and work on themselves with therapy.
As of this article, I currently work in private practice, One Person at a Time, along with contracting with behavioral health agencies located in Toledo, OH.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The journey has definitely had its struggles. I have been fired from a position. I have had to find creative ways to work positions that can mold me into the therapist I am today. I have had to learn about personalities of others and how that affects my work.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a licensed mental health therapist. I specialize in anxiety, depression, trauma, and grief. I am known for working with adolescents, young men, and men. I am most proud of being a black male clinician also known as “the black unicorn.” When I first became a therapist, I didn’t understand the impact of being a black male clinician in the mental health field until I began to embrace that title. I believe that continuing to show up for my clients while meeting them where they are at in their lives. Also, I am transparent and genuine in my approach in therapy.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
My favorite childhood memory is spending time over a close friends house being up late, playin N64 with Goldeneye, while drinking Mountain Dew:Code Red to help us stay up longer.
