Today we’d like to introduce you to Andres Rocha Florez.
Hi Andres, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
My professional career began in 2017; since that year, I graduated as a Social Communicator and Journalist from the Minuto de Dios University Corporation; in addition, at that same university and the same year, I obtained a diploma in Organizational Communication.
However, having graduated from that profession was something fascinating for my entire family nucleus because my family, more than all my mother, María Susana Flórez Salazar, was the one who always supported me from the beginning to be able to fulfill the goal of graduating as a professional. in the field of journalism and communication.
My mother, with a lot of effort, working independently selling coffee, aromatic water, and sweets on the street next to a hospital located in Bogotá, was finally able to help me and my brother, who is also currently in university, but in another profession…
During my stay as a journalism student, I did my first jobs in the field at the Minuto de Dios University, where I explored all my potential to interview guests and how fascinating it was to talk about different issues that were happening in Colombia in a radio program. From politics, sports, and even entertainment.
Those first jobs were essential to motivate me and continue on that path that today has me in that constant professional growth.
Due to the difficult job positioning within Colombia due to unemployment, in 2019, I decided to independently explore my profession as a journalist, creating my own media outlet called Deux Sports, with whom I have managed to cover different Colombian and international sports championships throughout of these three years.
Thanks to this project that I started, I was able to develop more skills within my profession and exercise it, achieving a good impact within Colombia covering the most important events of current sports.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It has not been an easy road because unemployment in Colombia is increasing every year, and positioning myself as a journalist within an important media outlet in the country has been complex, also because I see the need to continue growing as a professional and to be able to help my family financially, especially my mother who has been supporting me constantly, allowing me not to faint or regret having chosen this profession.
For this reason, the Deux Sports project has been the best so far because it has allowed me to make myself known little by little and gain that nice recognition within this industry, making known those athletes who are coming out afloat and who, with the follow-up I have seen them grow in their careers, filling me with pride for having had the privilege of being able to interview them before their abilities were exploited.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I was recently employed at a media outlet called HSB Noticias, which gave me the first job opportunity to pursue my career, but my Deux Sports project gradually declined because I got into that job, but I felt like I stopped on the other hand, what was giving me results, which was being able to interview and cover the events I wanted, and there I was not able to freely exercise that beautiful thing of attending to interview the best athletes.
However, that job helped me to support myself financially and help my family a little, plus I was able to self-finance and attend international events to cover them journalistically with my Deux Sports project.
Likewise, I spent a good time in Fémina Fútbol, a women’s soccer media outlet, where I introduced several Colombian soccer players who are now stars of the Colombian Women’s National Team, and there, they gave me the recognition of being the best journalist of the year in 2019.
At the moment, I’m still looking for more job opportunities, but I’m still committed to continuing to position Deux Sports as the best.
What matters most to you?
My family is very important to me because it is my motivation to continue trying every pedal stroke I give in my personal and professional life; having my mother and seeing her happy, together with my brother is the most important thing; in addition, as a complement I have my daughter and couple who have come to keep trying to be the best and position myself better, fighting for those constant dreams. Family love compares to nothing and is the most important thing.
