Today we’d like to introduce you to Adlai Stein.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started blacksmithing in 1989 as a hobby. I was part of a medieval reenactment group and met a local blacksmith there that helped me get started. I was 1 of the original members of the Idea Foundry, and I stated teaching & working out of their shop at Mill Works. When they moved to Franklinton, I quit my desk job and set up in a generous space there. 4 years ago, I had outgrown IF & moved to my own larger space in Franklinton. I was a competitor on season 3, episode 15 of Forged in Fire on the Hstory Channel. I demonstrate every year at the Columbus Arts Festival in the Big Local Arts Village. I create traditional blacksmith iron art and teach my art. Inclusiveness in my craft is very important.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My biggest struggles have been a leap of faith, trust in my skills, and in my decision-making. I’ve had so much support from my friends and family that it has helped a lot. The Covid shutdowns was a big struggle, but I wouldn’t let myself go backward I continued creating stock and building inventory for when art shows opened up. I also increased classes once we could open up again, which helped pay the bills and keep the shop open
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a full-time blacksmith. I use traditional methods and tools to create unique iron art. I started as a knife maker over 30 years ago, and while I still make knives, I enjoy making art sculptures and home furnishings. I love to teach my craft to others. I enjoy teaching people how inclusive blacksmithing can be, including those people who have disabilities and special needs.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I was expected to become a doctor, lawyer, or some sort of professional. I dropped out of college out of boredom, not knowing where I would end up. Having discovered smithing, it became my hobby and eventually my life.

I have known Adlai for more than 15 years and proud to call him friend. He is smart with a wonderful sense of humor, and a passion for teaching. If you join one of his classes, you will have fun and learn many things. I own some of his work. Take one of his classes, you will come away with something you made and great stories to tell.
