Nia Alexandra of Cleveland on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We recently had the chance to connect with Nia Alexandra and have shared our conversation below.

Good morning Nia , we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What is a normal day like for you right now?
Normal is relative for me, because nothing about what I do feels like the typical “everyday life”. My days are a healthy mix of creativity, structure, and a little bit of chaos — but in the best way. My mornings start with my cats, Virgo and Luna, my two shadows that keep me grounded before my day goes into hyperdrive. From there, I usually service or organize makeup clients and schedule upcoming bookings, which allows me to tap into my artistry and maintain those one-on-one connections I have with my clientele. My evenings often shift gears into nightlife serving hookah, so it’s very safe to say my days are full, but they’re far from dull. Somewhere in between, I try to carve out time to spend with loved ones or just enjoy little moments that rest and recharge me to do it all again the next day.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Nia — or Nini, depending on how you met me. There are a few different nicknames floating around out there. I’d like to think of myself as someone who is multifaceted; there’s no boxing me in or typecasting me. Some know me as a Makeup Artist, to some I’m a hookah server, and some may just know me for being me. Overall, I’m a creative, craving connections with people and hoping to be a positive impact either with a brush or through authentic interactions and energy enchnages in unique spaces. Beyond that, I’m trying to get my foot in the door with content creation and working to collaborate with bigger brands — something I’m really excited about as it lets me merge my creativity with business in a way that I feel is true to my personality. What makes my experience unique is that I’ve never limited myself to one lane; I’ve built a path where all of my passions can coexist, and that’s what keeps me inspired to do more with the opportunities I’ve earned and been entrusted with.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
I’m grateful that I let go of the version of me that was prone to shutting down emotionally. For a long time, I thought going numb was easier than actually allowing myself to feel — because deep down, I was afraid emotions would sink me. They scared me; facing them invited doubt and cloudiness I didn’t think I had the emotional intelligence to handle. At the time, shutting down was my form of self-protection that felt like survival mode, but in reality, it robbed me of truly experiencing life. Through honest reflection (shoutout to my therapist for that!), I’ve realized I’d rather feel everything than nothing at all, every single time. Does that mean it hurts less? No. Does it make processing easier? Absolutely not. Sometimes it feels like a sucker punch to the chest. But even the messiest emotions remind me that I’m human, that I care, and that the pressure I put on myself comes from wanting to grow. It’s not always comfortable — but comfort doesn’t create growth. And for me, I’d always rather elevate than stay stagnant.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I love questions like these because I just know younger me would think I’m so cool now. I’d tell myself that even with all the voices around you trying to steer your path, the loudest voice should always be your own. You can’t live your life for anyone else. You’re at the wheel — everyone else is just in the backseat. One day, the things that make you feel different will become the exact things people love and appreciate about you. Trust yourself, stay resilient, and know that every step you take and every hurdle you clear is bringing you closer to the life you were destined for. It’s already written.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What do you believe is true but cannot prove?
Definitely “Red String Theory” — the idea that certain people are tied together by an invisible thread. No matter the time, place, or circumstances, that thread has a way of pulling two people back into alignment when it’s meant for them to be. I don’t think it’s always about fireworks or dramatic moments either; sometimes it’s a quiet, steady knowing that keeps showing up, reminding you there’s something bigger at play, in any kind of relationship. Life may twist and stretch that string, but it never breaks. I believe the ones meant to be in your life will always find their way back to you. I can’t prove it, but I’ve felt it — and that belief keeps me open to connections that feel bigger than coincidence.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I do sometimes wonder what my family and loved ones would say when I’m no longer here, but then it feels morbid, and I try to think about something else. If anything, I’d want people to tell the stories of their most positive moments with me. Maybe it’s a client whom I serviced before her wedding day or maternity photos, maybe it’s my family recalling a goofy moment we had on vacation, or it could be a total stranger that I met in the club bathroom and happened to speak life into them at a moment where they really needed encouragement and reassurance. Talents and passions aside, I’d really want people to reflect on how much I mattered to them and how much I tried my best to give it my all, even at times when I didn’t have much to pour into myself. That sounds kind of sad, but it’s positive, I promise!
