Today we’d like to introduce you to Whitney Brewer.
Hi Whitney, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
Let’s take it back to 2008. I’m a 19-year-old sophomore at the Ohio State University and I had just declared Fine Art as my major…
There’s this professor that every photography student has heard of, let’s call him…Fred.
Fred passed out grades based on how many articles of clothing you were wearing. The fewer clothes, the higher the grade.
Being the bold & fearless human I am, I tested this theory, and sure as hell, the students were right. The fewer clothes, the better the grade.
As yucky as that felt, I learned something incredible about myself in that vulnerable process. Letting someone else photograph me in a vulnerable space & then hanging them for critique taught me a lot about letting go.
Letting go of what others think of me and how they perceive me. Learned that I was the only one in charge of my happiness, Learned that I had control over how I felt about my body without the opinions of others, and Ultimately, I learned self-love.
I vowed in these moments of clarity that if I ever had the opportunity to hold space for someone to grow in this via photographer in a safe space, I would do just that.
Fast forward to today, I took something that didn’t work for me and created a different way of doing things! I specialize in creating safe spaces for human beings to take themselves on in vulnerable ways, ultimately getting a taste of what it can feel like to love themselves wholly, in and out!
I use photography as a tool to show others how I see them and it is magical, inspiring, rewarding, and transformative work!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Ha! Smooth?!? What entrepreneur’s journey is smooth?!?
Honestly, I’ve learned from everything that has been thrown my way – good or bad. I think the biggest struggle was seeing and understanding that I had every ability to do it and be successful, I was the only thing in my way!
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I have 2 words.
Photography.
I’m proud as hell to provide and guarantee my clients a safe space for whatever comes up in a session. No judgment, no ill feelings, no weird vibes – just pure love, good vibes, and acceptance.
I’ve been photographed by other photographers and I can see why people don’t want to be photographed. Some people in my profession are yucky and it shows…And then, in turn, ruins it for others.
I pride myself on creating experiences in which people can heal and feel safe doing so.
For example, I worked with a woman in 2021 who had photograph trauma. She reached out to me to support her in changing how she felt about being in front of a camera. During her session with me, her inner child was alive and abundant and she was finally able to work through things to support her in feeling differently while in front of the lens. It was magic to witness and be a part of.
