Meet Vigatron / Vig Norris of Ohio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Vigatron / Vig Norris.

Hi Vigatron / Vig Norris, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
What happens when you mix the quirkiness of De La Soul, empowerment of Public Enemy, brashness of N.W.A., and sexual frustration of Richard Pryor? You get Vigatron, performer extraordinaire. Vigatron is a writer, rapper, poet, actor, producer and podcaster. Born and raised in East Cleveland, Ohio, he started a creative journey emulating the moves of Michael Jackson and then the complexities of Prince. Coming to the realization, that he mastered no instruments by teenage years, He pivoted his writing toward rapping and was instantly good at it. Cutting his chops with a couple of rap groups during high school, but then forced to go solo as life carried on. His first release was in 1999, with a project titled, “”Loveless” Excerpts from the play “Divine Intervention””. Vigatron has been at the forefront of the Cleveland hiphop scene, as a 2010 Cleveland Scene Magazine Music Award winner (rap/hiphop) and (as part of the group, N.O.I.R.) 2013 Rebel Army Radio Award winner (Best Group Record) and Ohio Hip Hop Awards, Album of the Year, nominee. Recently, he has made a smooth transition in to comedic and dramatic acting, under the name Vig Norris. Working with HWIC Productions, Berry Good Films and Caterpillar Event Productions, he has co-starred in films such as, “Mister Limbo”, “Air B&D”, “Car Show”, “Back to 2005” and more. Along with friend and collaborator, BKA Watts, they have turned their love of film into one of the most unique podcasts, in the form of Blerds and Clips. Here, they discuss Movies, TV, Video Games, Pop Culture and More.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Mostly smooth, but resistance with partners folding out of the art scene over the years. Keeping on the path has been lonely but also rewarding in having no compromises with the direction of the artform. Also being a bit of an alternative choice for contemporary hiphop music has been daunting, competing with mainstream tastes. It has been only difficult sticking to my guns while battling the new trends of popular music.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in traditional hiphop with a splash of humor and very strong visuals. Taking many cues from stand up comedy, I take on the brashness, approach and tongue in cheek demeanor when creating songs. I am most proud of taking the risks that make me stand out from others, in the fact that I am willing to be the butt of the joke or look foolish for the art, but I remain memorable. My music videos, album art and stage performances, make me a stand out in comparison to others. I tend to make performances a tad theatrical and use props when necessary.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
In an atypical way, my stage persona and attitude is almost the complete opposite of how I present when not on the job. Some would assume that I’m wild, but pretty boring and tame, with a very sick sense of humor. I can turn it on and off in a flash. I am also 100% sober, at all times. Also, even though I specialize in hiphop and rap music, most of my influences are rock and soul singers.
