Today we’d like to introduce you to Traci Ostrander.
Hi Traci, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Talmadge Road Mercantile is a primitive and antique shop with a focus on primitive & country antiques. We are a multi-vendor shop and also allow select consignment items as long as they are primitive in nature. Owner, Traci Ostrander’s main goal and focus has always been to bring a unique blend of primitives, antiques, farm smalls, garden décor, and primitive home accessories to all those who enjoy decorating with primitive antiques. Located in an old general store built in the 1880s, Talmadge Road Mercantile officially opened for business in June of 2012 and is the perfect setting for an antique shop.
Talmadge Road Mercantile is now going into its 10th year of operation in 2022. New merchandise and unique displays are always something you can count on each time you pay us a visit. If you are a collector of antiques or are specifically looking to buy authentic primitive antiques, please visit our Facebook or Instagram pages or stop by the shop any Friday or Saturday 12-4 PM year round or by appointment. We are conveniently located off I-70 on Exit 24 which is just west of Dayton, OH, and the I-75-I-70 interchange.
Talmadge Road Mercantile also holds 3 Open House Events each year for Spring, Fall & Christmas that are always a lot of fun and our customers look forward to attending. Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road traveled has been a rollercoaster. We’ve experienced high, highs and some lows from 2020 til present. One challenge we face that is always present–primitive antiques do not grow on trees, especially those dating from the mid to late 1800s– which is our specialty and focus. Often, when you do finally do find them, they tend to be higher priced and not the best candidate for resale. Therefore, travel is often required to scout out these primitive treasures. And often. Customers expect fresh merchandise. Another challenge is the items we offer, although awesome, make you feel happy inside and provide inspiration– they are not a necessity. I feel some customers have cut back on purchasing items that are not necessary!! On the business side– utilities, insurance, and the cost of products and inventory for resale have also skyrocketed.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Talmadge Road Mercantile LLC?
My main goal is to offer quality items that do not cost an arm and a leg as you might encounter elsewhere for the same or similar items. I try to keep the shop in a constant state of change for customers to experience from one visit to the next. Whether it be in the form of fresh inventory or an inspirational display of primitive antiques.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and are any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
Prior to the crisis we were a thriving, successful antique shop made up of many unique vendors up until the day we were shut down. Life was good. Then the next day you literally have the rug pulled out from under you overnight! Since then, I have encountered smaller purchases, less traffic and a handful of my longtime dealers chose to sell their wares elsewhere or entirely get out of the business. Thankfully, business appears to be returning to normal. My best words of advice are to accept the changes that have come our way and learn and grow from it. If something isn’t working don’t be afraid to make changes. Be unique, be inspirational. Stand out above the rest. Don’t be an imitator. Come up with your own niche. I remain thankful to have persevered throughout it all and do look forward with hope to the future.
