Meet Tina M. Payne

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tina M. Payne.

Hi Tina M., it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’m a Registered Nurse, Author, Speaker, and 6-figure Business Coach helping nurses monetize their expertise by launching and growing online businesses and scrub brands.

As the oldest of four siblings of divorced parents, there was always a high expectation that people had for me growing up. I always thought I wanted to be a doctor but when I got to college, I became pregnant at eighteen during my first year. As a result, I had to pivot and I decided to change my major to nursing. Raising a child as a single mom while going to school full-time proved to be one of the most challenging experiences I have ever gone through.

Although I relied on welfare to supplement food and medical, I still had to work at night and went to school during the day. I had to become very disciplined during that time. Many times it still didn’t feel like enough, juggling school responsibilities having to drop off my baby to two different daycares on my workdays. I still would have to leave some of my lectures early because the daycare closed at a certain time. As a result of that, I failed two very important classes and was subsequently kicked out of the nursing program. After a very daunting appeals process, I was reinstated a few months later. I graduated with my Bachelors of Nursing Science in 2004.

In 2013, I started to get the entrepreneurial itch, shortly after finishing up my master’s in nursing education, I realized that as hard as I was working to obtain all of these degrees, I would rather work that hard for myself. A year later, I launched a CNA School called Grace Health Career Center. It took almost a year to get everything in place and approved through my state. Unfortunately, I had to close the doors to that business when I became pregnant with my last son due to being put on bedrest early in pregnancy which led to complications, and I also did not have a team in place to run the business for me.

Being a wife and mom of five, I began to reject the idea of running the rat race and working up the clinical ladder as a nurse. So In 2017 is when I decided I really desired the freedom of homeschooling my children and working from home. I reduced my hours at the hospital to only weekends and decided to focus on launching my online scrubs business called Grace Health Scrubs. As a nurse, I have been required to wear scrubs for years and I knew a lot of the problems that came with scrubs. I wanted to be the solution for ill-fitting, faded, unflattering scrubs. At that time, there was not a lot of information about the steps to get started. I reached out to an individual on social media who seemed to have a lot of answers and experience in the industry. However, a few weeks later I realized that the person was not forthcoming or even honest about the business and actually told me that I would not succeed in this business if I did it on my own. Little did this person know that was the fuel I needed to hear in order to get me on track to my true purpose.

After making many mistakes early on, I finally learned and documented the blueprint to getting started in the Medical Apparel industry. Not only did I run my business but I wanted to keep others from making the same mistakes I did early on. Nurses began to message me and inquire to learn more about “how to start a scrubs business” and after a year and a half of providing virtual coaching and seeing the results of teaching them my blueprint, I launched my coaching business Tina M. Payne Consulting, LLC.

In addition to running my own scrubs business, I also provide online courses private, and group coaching services to nurses and other women who need help launching their scrubs or other healthcare businesses.

My most popular product is a digital guide, The Ultimate Scrubs Business Planning Guide has given over 200 women my blueprint for getting started in the Scrubs industry. It is my belief that nurses have unique qualities and critical thinking skills that make them exceptional business owners. My signature online course Scrub Shop Academy™ is providing people not only with the steps to starting their medical apparel business but helping them to create legacies for their families. Many of my students and clients start out as online retailers but some have gone on to open brick & mortar locations, warehouses, and have mobile scrub trucks.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
No, it has not been a smooth road to get here. Entrepreneurship is full of starts and stops, ups and downs. The biggest struggles to overcome are self-doubt and fear of failure. I could have given up on entrepreneurship after I shut down my first business but I didn’t. Everything I learned from starting and running that business has helped and prepared me. The best knowledge is experience. There are some things that just can not be taught sometimes we have to actually experience some of the struggles in order to get better.

Additionally, another struggle is playing the comparison game. Many new business owners want to skip the journey and go straight to the finish line of success. Comparing ourselves to other businesses that have more years and experience is the quickest way to kill your confidence. It is important to appreciate the process that you go through. Also, if you are struggling with what direction you need to take, seek out a mentor or coach who has already done whatever it is you want to do.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?

What matters most to you? Why?
My family matters to me the most. I love being able to provide and create something that I can leave for them when I am gone. Creating generational wealth is very important. In addition to that must spend quality time with them to gain freedom and to be able to fulfill my purpose at the same time.

In this way, I will also be able to fulfill my purpose as a coach and inspiration for busy moms and nurses looking to start a business.
