Today we’d like to introduce you to Ted Reinhart.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My dad started the DJ business. As a kid, I always looked up to him and wanted to be involved. I started helping him when I was in grade school, and eventually he passed the business over to me when I was old enough to drive to events.
When I first started, I was mostly obsessed with speakers and gear. At this point, I’ve been DJing for about 25 years and I’ve learned a lot in that time. As a wedding DJing, having and understanding good equipment is important, but working well with people is even more important. From the bride and groom to the families and guests, it’s your job to understand their wants and help everyone have a good time.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As with any endeavor, there are always challenges. Early in my career, I had to work to gain confidence speaking in front of large crowds.
Another challenge I experience today is navigating the content of modern music. I love helping couples celebrate their wedding day. Not only is it one of the most important days of their life, the love and commitment celebrated in marriage is also the glue that holds society together. Unfortunately, a lot of popular music today glorifies the opposite values and I don’t feel that music has a place at a wedding. I have to do my best to balance the wishes of couples with my values and beliefs.
Fortunately, almost all the brides and grooms I DJ for are great to work with. Whether it comes to picking out music or any other aspect of the day, I rarely run into that “bridezilla” stereotype depicted in TV shows. Most people are just excited to share a special day with their families and loved ones.
As you know, we’re big fans of The Music Men DJ Service. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
We are a mobile DJ service that specializes in weddings. The business was started in 1986 by Dan Reinhart and is now operated by his son, Ted Reinhart. As a small, family owned business with just one DJ, you know exactly who you’re going to be working with and who the DJ will be that shows up at your wedding. From planning the itinerary to providing ceremony music to making announcements to releasing tables for dinner and keeping guests on the dance floor, we’re well versed in what it takes to keep the day fun and running smoothly. Customers often comment on how easy we are to work with, and we pride ourselves in being flexible and catering to the specific needs of couples.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I think listening is the most important aspect of success for a DJ. Before an event begins, you have to listen to your customers to understand what they want. During an event, you have to constantly watch, listen, and respond to what’s happening. Is the music too loud, making it hard for guests to talk during dinner? Is the wedding party running late, requiring some adjustments to the schedule and coordination with other vendors? Are guests enjoying the dance music you’re playing, or do you need to switch genres? Listening and being attentive is critical for a DJ’s success.
