Today we’d like to introduce you to Richard Esipisu
Richard, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Let’s start at the beginning, I was born in Johannesburg, South Africa to Kenyan parents so my roots back home are deep. I moved back and forth between there and London, England my first 18 years before coming to Cincinnati to pursue my undergraduate degree in Political science
While I was here I returned to playing rugby, joined my friends in founding @wathesay which is a podcast and entertainment business and picked up photography for the first time! Since I started in 2023 it has really taken off and that’s gotten me here today still doing those same hard working principles in all facets of these endeavours
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not always been a smooth journey, and struggle has been a facet of my life since its inception. I have dealt with heavy metal poisoning as a child, constant upheaval with new homes, new schools and new countries. The adjustment each time has had its toll both mentally and physically. I took it on the chin though and I adjust quickly although it is never easy. For a significant part of my life I have been away from home or studying in a different country to my family. It is pretty daunting establishing yourself as a man and as a person with limited to no guidance simply due to distance. I think that was a great struggle for me and phone calls can only do so much. Becoming a man and a leader and someone who can take steps and risks on my own has been my greatest challenge and greatest triumph
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a photographer, a podcaster, an entertainment based businessman on top of being an international student
I’m also a rugby player
What sets me apart is my versatility, my skillset and my drive
I excel at everything I do and I try to do everything I can which often leads me to success. Who would’ve thought the kid from Africa would be impacting his community in Cincinnati the way I have
Who else deserves credit in your story?
My parents firstly through thick and thin especially my mother have been there for me as much as they can
But the most credit should go to ky brothers both Rekessi (26) and Kenna (20), soon 27 and 21 respectively
They’ve been my foundation for a very long time and I rely on them for counsel, restraint and a sustained goal of excellence between the three of us
My friends both in HS and here in America have also pushed me to excel and I’m forever grateful for their impact in making me better each day and for the push to greatness
