Meet Regina Huffman of My Allure Hair

Today we’d like to introduce you to Regina Huffman.

Hi Regina, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
For more than 30 years, I’ve built a career in the beauty industry not only as a hairstylist, but also as an educator, salon owner, published author, and entrepreneur. My passion has never been just doing hair. It’s been helping people build confidence, create opportunities, and build successful careers.

My journey began in 1994 as a young, single mother attending cosmetology school while working full time in a fast-food restaurant. I earned a scholarship, but just before graduating I learned I still owed a substantial balance to complete school. I graduated while seven months pregnant, and during the waiting period before taking my state board exam, I introduced myself to the owner of a respected salon. She believed in my determination and offered me a position as soon as I became licensed.

Over the next 11 years, I immersed myself in learning everything I could. Before online education existed, I invested in conventions, seminars, local classes, and business courses at Cincinnati State while also working additional jobs to support my family. As the newest stylist, I was often given the clients others considered the most challenging—from thick, textured hair to more complicated services. Instead of seeing those appointments as obstacles, I embraced them because they helped me become the stylist I am today. Every challenge became an opportunity to grow.

Since then, I’ve owned a salon, managed another, and now operate my own salon suite. Along the way, I became an educator and published two books—Beauty Business Keys to Success and Beauty Business Keys to Success Workbook. I wrote them because I wanted to create the resource I wish I’d had when I started. Every lesson comes from real experiences, real challenges, and real mistakes, so other independent beauty professionals don’t have to learn everything the hard way like I did.

That same mission has inspired me to begin opening my own cosmetology school. I’ve already established the business and formed the LLC because I want future beauty professionals to graduate with not only technical skills, but also the business knowledge, confidence, and professionalism needed to build successful careers.

I’ve learned that success isn’t about avoiding obstacles—it’s about refusing to let them be wasted. Every challenge I faced became a lesson, every lesson became part of my books, and now those lessons will become part of my school. If my story can inspire someone else to believe in themselves and keep moving forward despite the odds, then every obstacle was worth it.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The truth is, my journey was anything but smooth—it was shaped by resilience in the face of constant obstacles.

I started as a young, single mother, pregnant while finishing cosmetology school, and working multiple jobs just to stay afloat. I was told repeatedly that my dreams weren’t realistic—that I wouldn’t become a successful stylist or business owner because I was raising a child on my own. Instead of letting that define me, I used it as fuel to prove that I could build something greater.

In the early years, survival meant working three jobs while trying to grow my clientele. I had to push through exhaustion, financial pressure, and uncertainty, all while staying committed to my long-term vision. At the same time, I faced judgment within the industry—people questioned my abilities because I didn’t always physically resemble the clients I served. I had to earn trust through consistency, skill, and determination.

Opening my own salon brought a new set of challenges. I had no formal training in leadership, so I had to learn how to hire, manage, and motivate a team through trial and error. Finding the right space to bring my vision to life was also difficult, especially in a market with limited options. On top of that, I navigated a highly competitive industry where not everyone supported my success.

Life added its own unexpected hardships. I lost both of my parents just two weeks apart shortly after opening my salon—a devastating experience that tested my strength in ways I never imagined. Still, I had to continue showing up, leading my business, and serving my clients.

All of this happened during a time without the resources we have today—no social media, no online tutorials, no ride-sharing services. Everything required more effort, more time, and more persistence. I also had to continuously invest in my education, figuring out which trainings and certifications would truly help me grow and better serve my clients.

Looking back, the challenges were constant—but so was my determination. Every obstacle forced me to grow, adapt, and become stronger. My journey wasn’t easy, but it’s proof that resilience, vision, and hard work can turn even the toughest circumstances into success.

We’ve been impressed with My Allure Hair , but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I’ve always felt like it’s about so much more than hair. It’s about helping people feel good about themselves and giving them confidence when they leave my chair.

Over the years I’ve worked with every hair type and texture, and I really enjoy healthy hair and helping people reach their hair goals. Early in my career I was usually the one who ended up with the longest, thickest, or most challenging hair, and honestly, I’m grateful for that because it pushed me to learn and become a better stylist.

What makes me different is that I’ve never stopped learning. Back when I started there wasn’t YouTube or online education, so I went anywhere I could to learn—classes, conventions, seminars, and even business courses. I still believe there’s always something new to learn, which is why I’ve also become a beauty educator and love sharing what I’ve learned with others.

The thing I’m most proud of is the trust I’ve built with my clients. Some have been with me for decades, and I’ve had the privilege of doing hair for multiple generations of the same family. That means more to me than anything.

I want people to know that my business is built on honesty, education, healthy hair, and genuinely caring about the people who sit in my chair. I don’t believe in one-size-fits-all hair care. I take the time to listen, educate, and create a plan that’s right for each person. After all these years, I still love what I do, and I feel incredibly blessed that I get to do it every day.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I think the beauty industry is changing in a lot of ways, and some of those changes are really exciting.

I’m happy to see more recognition for things like natural hair, braiding, scalp health, and hair loss practitioners. Years ago those specialties didn’t always get the respect they deserved, and now people are realizing how important they are.

I do have some concerns too. I worry that in some places the education requirements and continuing education aren’t as important as they used to be. I think this industry needs strong schools, good instructors, and people who teach not only the technical side of hair, but also professionalism and how to truly care for clients.

Social media has also changed our industry. It can be a great way to learn and get inspired, but it can also spread misinformation. Watching a few videos doesn’t replace hands-on training and experience.

My hope is that over the next five to ten years we continue moving forward without lowering our standards. I think we can welcome new ideas while still making education, professionalism, and client safety our top priorities.
