Meet Novel Vibrations of Springfield, Ohio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Novel Vibrations

Hi Novel, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
We originally formed in August of 2022 and started off with just three of us—Olivia playing the bass and singing, Adam on drums, and Hannah on guitar. We spent a few months practicing before deciding we wanted to look for a fourth member because we wanted to incorporate Hannah on synthesizer into our music. After going through a few people who ended up not being a great fit, we met our guitarist Michael, and we have been playing together ever since. Michael is on guitar full time, while Hannah switches between synth and guitar. We played our first show in August of 2023, and have continued to play at local bars and DIY house venues. We released our first single titled “Thanks for Nothing” on Thanksgiving this past November, and our second single “Deja Vu” February of this year.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely was not smooth! We really struggled to find a fourth member as we mentioned before. First we tried to add a keyboardist to the mix, but that candidate wasn’t the most reliable or accountable, which is kind of important when you’re in a band. After parting ways with her, we found a guitarist online. She ended up quitting because we told her we didn’t like when she brought her sugar daddy to recording sessions and local shows with us. Long story short, it can be hard to find band members that mesh well.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
We’ve dabbled with a few different styles the last couple of years. Shoegaze, as a genre, has always been a staple in our sound, but we’ve drawn inspiration from post-punk and art pop as well. We kinda think of it as My-Bloody-Valentine-meets-Joy-Division-meets-the-Velvet-Underground. We’re proudest of our single “Thanks for Nothing,” which was the first song we ever wrote together. It went through several iterations for well over a year before we honed in its final character. We all agree that it’s a great representation of our sound.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
We’ve taken some risks with adopting our DIY ethos. We’re entirely self-managed, funded, recorded, and produced, which has allowed us to take more control over our direction at the expense of increased labor. We see this as a worthwhile tradeoff since we have specific artistic visions that we’ve found difficult to convey.
