Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicholas Sheppard.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started my business after a chance encounter at my news class in high school, I had gone in early to edit videos for my class when my teacher asked if I would like to work with the man who needed a celebration of life recorded, I said yes and after the event, I realized I enjoyed making videos and taking photos for others so I went out, bought my camera and started offering people opportunities to get their photos taken or record events they were doing, and I slowly started expanding adding editors and other creatives to my team which has allowed us to be where we are today
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Our business has had a mostly smooth road with our projects that we have done so far with errors being fixed quickly by our team, after a backup problem with a client’s recordings we implemented multiple failsafes now implemented in our process to try and stop as many problems as we can such as the use of physical and cloud backups of all of our projects. We have an automated system in which all of our recordings are backed up into hard drives then into the cloud, we then have one of our team make sure the upload has worked properly.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Our team does photography and videography for all types all around Ohio. We specialize in events such as weddings or family reunions. I am most proud of a personal photo project I took on doing photos of the Woodward Dream Cruise in Michigan. I believe what sets us apart from others is the personal aspect of our projects, we’re people just like you and so we like to get feedback from our clients throughout the project, working directly with them to give the best quality we can.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
The best advice I would have for anyone starting out is that you don’t need the best gear or anything, you just need yourself and the confidence to go out and pursue what you want to do. You should work on investing in yourself before investing in physical gear for your camera, knowing how to balance your camera settings and learning proper composition goes a lot farther than having the newest best piece of equipment. The best ways to go and invest into yourself is to either spend time just doing photography/videography for yourself or go on YouTube and learn what you need to be your best.
