Hi Mikey, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
Mikey Ray… a name that came about due to a few friends rapping in the closet, on some bad equipment, chasing a dream. Music has always been my go-to in order to cope with my emotions be it good, bad, or indifferent. Started off drumming in school, got a drumset for Christmas, then senior year came. Good old 2010, started getting more involved at parties, would start freestyling at some random parties here and there, sold my drumset, bought a microphone and software, then BAM, I started writing lyrics at the tender age of 18. Made a few social media profiles, then I started getting booked for shows in Cleveland, and since I was born there, I figured it only be right that that is where my music career is also born. Got kicked out of the first group I was in, then I made a group named King Corporation. We had a solid run from about 2013-2015, I believe. We did so many shows in Cleveland and surrounding areas in Ohio, opened up for big names like Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Machine Gun Kelly, Stitches, Hopsin, Ying Yang Twins, the list goes on and on. Ended up going on a 2-year hiatus, then made a comeback in 2018 as a solo act, still going by Mikey Ray. Fast forward to today. I joined a team, Emerald WavZ, and am the co-owner of the label. The team includes myself, Codiene (the founder of the label and other owner), and Fredo Slim. We have merchandise for sale, music out on all streaming platforms, videos out on YouTube, and our website, www.emeraldwavz.com….. We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road hasn’t been smooth, but it has definitely been entertaining. From being stiffed on shows, not receiving payment for services, being fed false promises, I mean, there’s a lot.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I make hip-hop music under the name Mikey Ray with the group named Emerald WavZ. I specialize in lyricism, photos, videos, and making sure there isn’t a dull moment. I would say at this moment, I am most proud that I am the co-owner of the label/group Emerald WavZ. I believe my passion is unmatched, and that’s what sets me apart from others. I will give it my all until Emerald WavZ is a household name or I’m 6 feet deep.
