Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Thomas.
Hi Michael, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Like a lot of good ideas, Conch Republic was born while a group of friends sat around a table at our favorite Mexican restaurant celebrating Cinco de Mayo in 2007. What started as a fun conversation about creating a Jimmy Buffett-inspired beach party band has evolved into a mission that’s been Keeping Summer Alive for nearly two decades.
While Jimmy Buffett’s music was the spark that brought us together, we quickly realized our audiences wanted more than a concert—they wanted an experience. Somewhere along the way, we realized it wasn’t just about the music anymore. It was about how people felt when they left our shows. That’s when Conch Republic truly found its identity.
Today, Conch Republic is more than a band—it’s a beach experience. We perform a mix of beach classics, rock, pop, island favorites, and occasionally our own original music. Whether we’re playing a city festival, winery, corporate event, casino, private celebration, or destination event, our mission is always the same: We BRING the BEACH.
Although we’re based in Lexington, Kentucky, we’ve always believed bringing people together is more important than the miles it takes to get there. That’s why we’ve lived by one simple philosophy since day one:
Have BEACH. Will Travel.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but I think that’s true of anything that’s lasted nearly twenty years.
The biggest challenge wasn’t simply keeping the band together—it was discovering who we were. Conch Republic started as a five-piece Jimmy Buffett-inspired band, but we were always looking for ways to make the experience better. Over the years we added songs, refined our presentation, increased audience interaction, introduced games and contests, expanded the lineup, and, when necessary, made personnel changes to find people who shared the same vision. Every change had one purpose: to create a more memorable experience for our audiences.
Like everyone else in the entertainment industry, COVID temporarily brought live music to a halt, and we played only three shows that year. Thankfully, live music returned, and so did the opportunity to do what we love.
Looking back, I think every challenge helped shape who we are today. We never stopped asking, “How can we make this even better?” That commitment to continually improving the experience is what transformed Conch Republic from a band into a beach experience that people remember long after the last song is over.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’ve never wanted Conch Republic to be just another band.
At our core, we’re in the memory-making business—music is just how we do it.
Every time we take the stage, our goal is to create an atmosphere where people can set aside everyday stress, have fun, and make memories.
Everything we do is intentional. We realized it wasn’t about playing our favorite songs—it was about creating the right atmosphere. That’s why audience participation is such a big part of what we do. We love turning guests into Friends of Conch Republic, or FoCRs. Whether it’s the dance contest, sing-alongs, conga lines, beach balls, or those spontaneous moments between the band and the crowd, we want everyone to feel like they’re part of the experience.
What makes me most proud isn’t the number of shows we’ve played or the miles we’ve traveled. It’s seeing people laughing, dancing, singing, and leaving with lasting memories.
That’s how we Keep Summer Alive—all year long.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I think live entertainment is only going to become more important over the next five or ten years.
People are looking for shared experiences. They want a reason to get together with family and friends, laugh, sing along, dance, and enjoy an evening together. That’s something you just can’t replace.
I think the bands that stand out will be the ones that create an experience, not just play a concert. To me, it’s never been just about the music. It’s about creating an atmosphere where people can have fun together.
People may come for the music, but they come back for how you made them feel.
